Hydrogen fuel-cell cars face an uphill battle toward mass adoption.
Both cars and fueling infrastructure need to be made widely available before large numbers of consumers can seriously consider switching from gasoline to hydrogen.
But under certain circumstances, hydrogen could prove very attractive to consumers for one simple reason.
When produced using renewable energy, hydrogen could cost nearly the equivalent of 50-cent-per-gallon gasoline, according to a study by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).
That will only happen if "the stars align" and several factors work in hydrogen's favor, notes industry trade journal WardsAuto noted in a June report on the findings.
The NREL plan assumes large-scale production of hydrogen through electrolysis, but with renewable energy used to provide the majority of electricity in place of fuels that produce high levels of carbon emissions.
Thanks to anticipated emissions standards for power plants and other factors, the NREL anticipates much greater use of renewable energy in the coming decades. Renewable sources could generate as much as 80 percent of U.S. electricity by 2050 using currently-available technology, according to NREL data....

Which is English means, "Hydrogen will only be economical if we get the government to outlaw or tax alternatives."
My teenage grandson commented “Just because it’s possible technologically at some point doesn’t mean that it’s a good idea”.
Are you suggesting helium as an alternative to a hydrogen future? BTW, the NY Times was touting hydrogen produced by electrolysis fueled by nuclear power, when it looked like we were running out of petroleum, fifty years ago.
Powerful and energetic!
Lies.
Park your Hydrogen car for a month at the airport. You are running an air conditioner freezer 24/7 for a month.
Betcha that costs more than 50 cents a gallon, more than gasoline and diesel too.
Lol. Just a hunch.
We don’t know what the future will look like. I am an all of the above person when it comes to energy and may the best technology win (and it will).
Precocious wisdom, lacking in many adults I know. But these adults are in the Tech industry, and their attitude keeps them running furiously in the hamster ball.
Ridiculous. The energy equivalent hydrogen to 20 gallons of gas would have to be towed behind the car in a tank.
Wishful thinking. First of all, electrolysis doesn't happen easily. The components and support apparatus, including the catalysts, are obtained from using standard manufacturing processes using oil and coal. The electrolytes are similarly created, and you can't just use regular bathwater. Unless they plan to use green energy in the total manufacturing process, this will still produce high levels of carbon emissions, not that it is a bad thing. Of course "they" say it is, but they're running a con game. The 50 cents price is achieved by using fossil fuels and government subsidy (and lies).
Does that include the $4.00 green subsidy?
There's the flaw right there. It takes energy to produce hydrogen gas by electrolysis. Now, if you could somehow train magical unicorns to do it, you're all set. Otherwise...
The average guy can handle gasoline without killing himself.
The same cannot be said of hydrogen.
Fed Tax....$2.50.... State Tax...$1.00
No. I’m not suggesting anything.
The prototype fuel cell vehicles I’ve read about create hydrogen from natural gas. Why not just use the natural gas for fuel rather than adding another level of cost and complexity? Makes no sense to me.
Water vapor is much, much more of a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. The left will vilify hydrogen if it looks viable.
