Among Manchesters proudest scientific developments has to be graphene - its very own homegrown wonder material first isolated by scientists at the University of Manchester back in 2004.
A material made from a single atom layer of carbon that is super lightweight, super conductive and super strong, it seems to have endless capabilities in the modern world - from smart clothing to intergalactic exploration.
Twelve years after its discovery via a sticky tape dispenser - and six years since its developers Andre Geim (pictured below) and Konstantin Novoselov were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics - and interest in graphene has never been so high.
Its that enthusiasm that a new exhibition at Manchesters Museum of Science & Industry taps into from July 23, laying out the history of graphite and graphene, immersing audiences in its unique 2D world, and asking them to imagine the endless inventions it can aid....

The oceans are as full as they ever were. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A WATER SHORTAGE. There is only a lack of water at the price someone wants to pay.

As far a filtering the salt out of ocean water goes, there is a little thing called enthalpy of dissolution that might prove troublesome.

The water is there, but you cant drink it straight from the source. There is an inherent cost to that. The Israelies have gotten the cost down considerably. I think they can make a cubic metre of water drinkable for about $48. Graphene, because it is very cheap, will make it even cheaper. It can bring the cost down into the $30’s.
There’s still the cost of pumping and distribution. But still, if the cost is bearable, imagine the interior of Australia becoming a breadbasket rather than a desert. Or the Sahara blooming.

If we could free ourselves from environmental propaganda we would be investing heavily into smaller nuclear power generation using thorium (which can dispose of current nuclear wastes). Cheap energy benefits everyone.

Energy will must be inputted into the system to do the filtering. Enthalpy is like a hooker, they give nothing away for free. Entropy is like a divorce and all is in chaos and greater disorder.

There are places whee it just doesn’t rain much. On the other hand, the enirowhackos tearing down dams means that an awful lot of desperately needed fresh water is being allowed to flow out into the oceans. If all the rivers were equipped with locks, the fish could still swim upstream along with barge and boat traffic. While the locks were closed, the upstream water could be diverted into canals. If the Mississippi River was diverted 90% of the time, that would be over a billion cubic feet of water per hour. The Sacramento River fifty million cubic feet per hour. Columbia River half a billion. It seems incredibly wasteful to see all that rainfall going out to sea.
The amount of energy is the question. Reverse Osmosis systems require quite a pressure differential and that is generally provided by pumps pressurizing water. The graphene filters supposedly require very little pressure. Possibly so little that just letting ocean pipes 20 feet below sea level fill ground aquifers through a graphene filter would require nothing but gravity, and pumping water back up from the ground is the norm for utilities in places like CA.
