A looming First Amendment showdown drew closer Tuesday as a federal judge ordered conservative media host Glenn Beck to identify at least two confidential sources in connection with a defamation lawsuit stemming from Beck's reporting on the Boston Marathon bombing.
The suit was filed by Saudi Arabian student Abdulrahman Alharbi, who was injured at the scene of the deadly bombings. Beck continued to link the Saudi national to the attacks even after U.S. officials said publicly he'd been cleared.
U.S. District Court Judge Patti Saris ruled that Beck must disclose the names of two Department of Homeland Security employees who allegedly gave a Beck producer information backing up the radio and TV host's claim that Alharbi was the "money man" behind the attack.

If so - that is one of the most ill-informed comments I have ever read here at FR.
This is a more general question: If a person publishes what they know to be a material falsehood for the specific purpose of seeing a class of people they know to be telling the truth publicly maligned, is that libel/defamation against that class of people and/or the individuals within that class of people? Basically, is taqiyya a form of libel - whether it be Muslim, liberal, political, media etc taqiyya. lying for a cause with the intent of seeing your enemies FALSELY maligned?
The short answer to that question is no.
Get informed about the Saudi and you won't be advertising your views. I figure you are not aware that Michelle Obama visited him in the hospital. You probably didn't know he was in Boston when his student visa was for a different location. He ignored the restrictions on his visa. You probably didn't see his picture with his gold plated hand gun. (in Massachusetts, no less) The guy is some kind of royalty and is very connected.

Do some reading. See the picture of this guy with his gold plated handgun. Ask why he visits the White House. Ask why Michelle Obama visited *him* and not other Marathon bombers who had their legs blown off. Ask why he was in Boston and not where his visa said he was supposed to be. Ask why he was at the finish line. Ask why he ran from the finish line and the dogs alerted on him when he was captured. Ask why all charges against him were dropped mysteriously and he was whisked away to the Saudi Embassy in DC in a private plane. Ask why *you* are cheering for the Saudi!

And ask why Beck claimed that he had a screenshot showing who changed the “known terrorist” classification from this guy even while the Boston Police Dept were searching his apartment and taking evidence, IIRC (IOW, before any investigation could have had time to “clear” him). If the records the intel community is giving the judge don’t show the same thing as that screenshot then there’s much, much deeper doo-doo going on, with our own intel community being the perpetrators of gross crimes against the nation. And there is evidence in other instances where that is known to be the case so it wouldn’t surprise me one iota.
The court cases and Congressional hearings are just free advertising for this lawless regime. The more we see, the more the critical people who could bring this to a head see that they are really and truly on their own, because all of government is enabling the thogocracy. This judge has to know what the regime does to whistleblowers. The regime should have been thrown in Gitmo a long time ago for what they’ve done to whistleblowers, IG’s, etc. (Though Gitmo is the easiest place around because the foreign enemy combatant in our White House is just letting prisoners from there go free.... you couldn’t write fiction more stupid than this - and yet he gets away with ALL this treasonous crap. It’s an advertisement to any would-be white hats, that nobody will EVER execute justice, and those who fight for justice will suffer dearly).
This country is in far, far, far worse shape than even most people here at FR are willing to admit.
