U.S. Special Operations Command wants to see if it can slap a "Made in the U.S.A." label on the world's most popular weapon the Russian-designed AK-47 assault rifle.
In war-torn countries like Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, where the United States has an interest, the iconic AK-47 with its curved ammo magazine is a favorite of insurgents and allies alike because it is inexpensive to own and operate. Compared to U.S. weapons like the M-4 assault rifle, it's also more durable and uses ammunition that's easier to find.
Now, U.S. Special Operations Command is scouting for companies that might have the interest and ability to manufacture the ubiquitous gun and other Soviet-bloc-era weapons here in the United States....

I thought the Century Arms RAS-47 and Arsenal AKs were produced in the USA.
They can buy them from Russia for a few bucks apiece. Let’s spend a billion on a knock-off that will be riddled with bugs. That’s government thinking.
Should be pretty easy to find a company - the designs are simple and low tech
Arsenal is in Bulgaria.
What about Red Jacket ....... nevermind

The US Army tried to copy the German MG42 during WW2. Some draftsman made a mistake converting millimeters to inches, and allowing for the increased length of the US .30 cartridge, and the prototype didn’t work. Instead of correcting their mistake, they dropped the whole project.
Back in January, there was a story about Kalashnikov USA setting up a production facility in Florida. Pompano Beach, I believe.
Is there a Ti version?
The basic design of the AK has remained unaltered for over 50 years. There are some variants made by higher end manufacturers that are very accurate.
The reliability of the AK is undeniable - especially in comparison with the AR platform (it’s main rival). When you give an AK a better barrel and get AR type accuracy with the reliability of an AK it is superior IMO. However, opinions about firearms are much like opinions about cars. Everyone has an opinion based on their own biases and priorities.
Now you've done it / snigger
The Kalashnikov factory in Florida is moving forward last I heard.
AK vs AR
A nice rifle that does use 7.62x39, but not an AK. They are probably looking for interchangeable parts, (bolts, covers, gas tubes, etc.) as part of the deal.
Arsenal does some manufacturing in the U.S., but I think the receivers are still made in Bulgaria: http://www.arsenalinc.com/usa/Rifles/
Can’t kill a weapon as reliable as the AK47 and its variants.
I’m probably the only guy on this site that eschews the AR 15 platform. I’m 7.62 all the way,
be it 39 mm, 51mm, 63mm, or 78.5 mm( krag 30-40 just to mess you up).
I’ll buy an AR 10 when I win the Lotto.
