I need some help from you computer gurus. Just powered up my Toshiba laptop a little while ago and began surfing. Suddenly a tone started beeping and a message filled the screen saying a malfunction had been detected and gave a toll-free number to call to get help from a technician (yeah, right). Underneath that message is a screen saying that Windows 8.1 64-bit Defender encountered an error code: 0x80016CFA. Can't close the windows, and powering down the laptop fails, it just powers back up.
I sure could use some help FRiends.
Nuke it from space. It’s the only way to be sure.
Reference that.
Most likely. Check out uBlock Origin. Seems to beat the pants off of addblock plus which I used to run as well.
Most (99% +) of the web I have to explicitly say ok, show me that damned add.
Ahem.... I am 6 foot tall and a dude.
Never been your wife either....
I am pretty sure I am the only midget on FR. ;-)
You are not Techno Viking are you?

I, too, am doing a reference ping on your post. Never heard of JetClean. I'm going to run it right now. Then, on to the next one. Thanks!
Never ever load Norton anything. It’s more like a virus than virus protection. Long gone are the days when it was a decent product. There are plenty of good anti-virus programs that are free or reasonably priced. Windows Defender for example is fairly good and it’s free.
were you surfing boobie play time sites?
Don’t use Windows unless you need it to run a specific program.
Chromebooks or Linux are much safer for web surfing or every day office tasks.
Lol you must work in IT.
Poster 3 has the answer. It’s phishing. They worked me over a few weeks back with a sound warning screaming and a crisis message claiming to be my provider.
I was to call this 800 number. Turned out it was a scam out of India.
I never ever leave a web page without clearing the cache.
But I had something like you describe take over my browser. All I had to do was type a website like msn.com into Cortana, and it came up in a second tab. Then I just closed the browser. Then I ran a full scan. There was no virus or malware, just one weird browser trick.
Mainly I’ve been having problems with websites changing my home page, but that’s easily fixed. But it’s getting worse lately.
I don’t dance either unless my wife pours lots of beer into me but then..... I don’t have huge pecs, a six pack or face braids either.
Btw, he wasn’t dancing. He was warming up for a visit to the Muslim communities. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berserker
(Yeah I know the whole story behind him, but I like my version better)
Too late to get it from Bluesprig.com. I got it from somewhere else. Wow, the computer is noticeably zippier (is that a word?). Ran the second one, junkware removal tool also. Don’t know if I need the third one since my web browsing is tame but if I get in the mood I’ll run it also.
Can’t wait to run JetClean on my work computer. It was new in 2007 and pretty slow now which actually isn’t a problem. All I do is word processing and occasional forays on the web to file electronic documents at various court websites and the USPTO. Believe me, I don’t want to do that stuff fast. I’ve been running glary utilities once in a while which doesn’t seem to do much. Wish me luck with JetClean tomorrow. And thank you!
thanks

Tech Support Scams Caused Over $2.5m in Financial Losses This Year Alone
JP Buntinx June 8, 2016 News, Security, Technology
Not all of these tech support calls are aimed at installing malware on a computer, mind you. Some people will call up computer owners and offer to remove viruses for a small fee. Regardless of whether there were any virii to begin with or not, consumers will gladly give up device access to get rid of the malicious software. In doing so, they also allow criminals to install the malicious software consumers try to avoid.
