I just have to get this off my chest, websites in general have become incredibly annoying! Videos play that I don't want to watch, I start reading something and a pop comes up asking me sign up for an email I will never ever read, flash ads give me the dizzy;s, your bullshit plugins give me script errors and on average you leave 10-15 tracking cookies.
And you folks are surprised people are using ad blocker? If someone comes up with annoying blocker you are screwed! Concentrate on user experience and then revenue, I just flat out leave websites I would usually spend more time on but you literally chase me away or lock up my browser.
Read this: https://alternate-dns.com/
Essentially you change your routers choice of DNS to
Primary: 198.101.242.72
Secondary: 23.253.163.53
then on your home LAN these two addresses will be used rather than your cable default DNS. These unwanted sites will return 127.0.0.1 (a guess?) for annoying ad sites as well as malware & phishing sites. I had been using Ad Block Plus add on, but so far this seems to be better and faster..at least so far. It seems too good to be true...so keep alert. Perhaps some Freeper could explain the downside?
Ditto everything you said and then some. I especially like the slideshows with a pop up blocking any description of the pic.
Everyone who wished Flash to go away when they could just turn off Flash Player or uninstall it will really hate HTML5 ads. Now advertisers just create the same annoying bloated ads without Flash but you can’t turn off those ads as easily.
There was an article the other day about how Forbes had downgraded some CEOs wealth to nothing. I wanted to read, but Forbes wouldn’t let me in. So, I googled the gal’s name... there was another site that let me read the article.
Too bad, so sad, Forbes.
Your father is correct. TV cameras today are $200K, lighting and news casters cost a bundle and set designers need money for their families. Thus, ads are annoying but productive.
The problem is that ads have become louder, longer and more indecent. Thus, it is best to keep kids aways from tv’s and computers and movies. Well, that’s no fun for kids. How about a dvd player with good movies and The Rifleman with Chuck Connors episodes?
The ones that annoy me are the “slideshow” pages that not only drag you through ten pages for what could be accomplished with one, but they design each page with little ad right beside the “next page” button with arrows that look deceptively like a graphic to go to the next page, and the pages also jump around erratically while loading, making it very easy to inadvertently click one of those ads. Some even time a popup ad to open over that “next page” button just as you go to click it. They need to start getting paid for conversion rather than just click-through, that would stop this nonsense. Nobody is going to buy a thing from a site they were tricked into opening.
Two or three years off of TV now, watching Netflix, youtube, etc. I had already turned TV off for the most part, wasn’t turning it on, favoring Netflix.
I was in a hotel just over a year ago and “got” to watch TV. I was ill. More commercial than show.
That is not the half of it. Websites have become generally unreadable due to the “handheld idiot device” revolution.
Used to be everything was on the screen, you could look around, see what’s what - then, all the websites were redisigned to make them more “idiot handheld device”-friendly. (One of the last website to undergo this DOWNgrade was the Townhall.com, for example, just very recently. ESPN, for example, did this several years ago, along with starting to promote European soccer leagues that no one in the US will EVER be interested in)
Now you see two headlines, no details, and you have to scroll and scroll to see more - headlines (links), no details.
*”Idiot Handheld Device” is a term I coined to describe the USERS of these devices, rather than the technology that makes them possible.
May the webdesigners who have ruined the “desktop” internet surfing experience burn in he** for all eternity (said with my tongue planted only partly in my cheek. ;>)
If you don’t know why people who use Handheld devices are idiots, you are either:
a. a part of them problem (ie yes you might be one of them),
or
b. you haven’t been paying attention (hint: go to any public place, includeing streets and crosswalks; ANYONE you see who is walking/sitting/etc incessantly loking down into the palm of their hand is a 100% no-doubt-about-it total unadultered IDIOT, regardless of “computing power” in their hand.
And, they are starting to suffer from chronic neck ailments as a result (no joke, Google it). Eye problems soon to follow as these morons age ...
Blow up your tv
Throw away your paper
Go to the country
Build you a home
Plant a little garden
Eat a lot of peaches
And try and find Jesus
On your own.
Bump ad blocking servers
If you turn off the ad blocker they still won't let you through.
Bye, bye Forbes
For android devices, block ads by rooting your android device and installing ADAWAY. It works great on my Moto E android phone and Lenovo android tablet.
You want free news sites. Here is a website that lists the websites of ALL of the TV, radio, newspaper and magazine websites in the world. Have fun:
Mondo Times website. Lists all TV, radio, newspaper and magazine website in the world
http://www.mondotimes.com/
For android devices, block ads by rooting your android device...
I’ve had my Samsung Galaxy in a glass of water for a week and there are no signs of any roots. What am I doing wrong?
It’s all about the elusive spondulicks.
Amen.
Small small text annoys me. So tiny that you have to zoom in. I use NoSquint to remember the text size for sites I go to. Web designers should set font size at 100% = 12pt = 16px so it starts out as readable. http://websemantics.co.uk/resources/font_size_conversion_chart
Really bad navigation.
Have a set end to the webpage instead of endless scroll. You know Page 1 then Page 2 etc.
Cookies used to track you so you see the same item you searched on hours or days ago over and over. Youtube showing me not variation but sameness until I delete the cookies.
Articles that are really ads. Kinda like those identity theft and gold ads on radio shows.
Example of bad website is http://www.yahoo.com
They do everything wrong. Only reason they are still kicking is name recognition. Once the ceo Marissa Mayer is fired you will changes.
Agree. Some sites I give up on the moment I see them. Some even before all the crap loads. Here’s a hint to all you “Web designers” out there, and the PR/marketing types who hire them. No, you’re not actually doing a good job, not actually generating interest in your company or product. Just the opposite. No one wants to work with fools who think that kind of excrement is a good idea.
