So, who’s staying home in November if Trump’s the nominee?
Hot Air ^ | February 22, 2016 | Allahpundit

I am, says Erick Erickson, and he's not alone. One of the chief coping mechanisms from righties on social media this weekend upon surveying the destruction in South Carolina was to swear they'll never be a Trumpist, even if the heavens fall. I believe Erickson, but I'd also bet cash money that 90 percent of the people saying "HELL NO NEVER HAPPEN" today will grudgingly come around over the next eight months upon being reminded, not on a daily but on an hourly basis, that Hillary Clinton is a pathological liar who'd be in prison if not for her status as the creme de la creme of Washington's elites.

I'm not saying conservative revulsion at Trump isn't real. It is, and I think when it all shakes out in November that Trump will have seen more Republicans stay home for him than stayed home for either Romney or McCain. But I don't think there'll be a third party and I also don't think that some sliver of conservatives staying home will doom Trump's candidacy. Given Hillary's weakness and his own appeal to independents and Reagan Democrats, it's possible that he'd find the votes he needs to win in the center. That would be the final indignity to the conservative movement after having its impotence laid bare for more than a year -- staging a mass boycott of Trump on election day and discovering that Trump can win anyway...

You are either a hillary supporter or a big ASSUMER.

You assume the ‘60% unfavorability’ rating is the whole truth;
You assume hillary will be the nominee;
You assume hillary will defeat Trump.

You will not ‘help’ Trump because of these assumptions!?
Can’t you come up with better argument for not ‘helping’ Trump?
Oh, right, you support hillary!

“It has nothing to do with pride, it’s about voting for a liberal. Trump is a lying liberal.”

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

It’s true that he seems to be Liberal about some things. But he genuinely loves this country (certainly the Democrats don’t), and from a Conservative viewpoint, he:

Will build a wall and put a hard stop on any illegal immigration

Will cut taxes for individuals and businesses

Will smash radical terrorists

Will rebuild the military

Will reduce the size and scope of government

Will end Obamacare

Will renegotiate bad trade deals

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Doesn’t sound very Liberal to me.

I've read more trump-pets saying they won't vote for Cruz than Cruzaders saying they won't vote for trump -- but to be sure there are those on both sides who claim they won't vote for anyone but their guy. I think that is misguided, short-sighted and "cutting off one's nose to spite their face".

As for me, as a point of personal pride and political integrity, I do not vote for any recently-reformed-democrats, especially if they speak proudly of their RINO-esque, lefty "NYC-Values" and espouse big-govt solutions -- in the primary election.

However, as I have consistently indicated, if a conservative like Cruz is not the nominee, I will figuratively don MOPP-Level-4, triple-glove my hands and unwillingly & under duress vote for whoever opposes the dem candidate in the general election. At that point, I don't really care *who* the repubs put up, I have to vote against the dems. We certainly don't need bigger govt, but if the nominee is not Cruz, then whoever is left will undoubtedly grow govt (at least) somewhat measurably less than Bernie/Hitlery and that will have to be acceptable.

Thanks much for your considered reply. I’ll try to be attentive to your points.

>>>It’s true that Trump doesn’t have any core philosophical underpinnings that guide him...

This is a minimum requirement for me: a core of conservative values. Small government, individual freedom, rule of law not man, constitutional-conservativism, moral values on the sanctity of life, the importance of family as the basic unit of civilization...

>>>he still strikes me as having more old fashioned american values than Hillary.

The above *are* American values. I don’t think either have them.

>>There’s no question in my mind that he would control immigration (both mexicans and muslims) much more than Hillary.

Again, touchback amnesty, same result. I really don’t believe Trump on this issue anyway; he’s very late to it and he’s extremely vague on how he would accomplish his big promises. I think he’d drop it in practice or revise it out of all meaning, but still talk tough.

>>>I also like the way he’s taken a sledgehammer to political correctness and multiculturalism, hasn’t bowed down to Black Lives Matter, to the feminists, to the muslims, and all the other victim groups.. emasculating the media.. hasn’t cowed down..

His main campaign message is: “I’m strong, politicians are weak.” That’s one leg of his appeal. Strong is certainly good, but only if it is directed properly and constrained by law and constitution. Trump seems quite unconstrained and his policies misdirected.

The second leg of his message is nationalism. But nationalism is not the same as conservatism. Nationalism can be socialist, corporatist, autocratic, many things that are not American conservatism.

>>>On the economy, there’s no way he can be worse than Hillary.

He could easily cripple the economy quickly if he gets his way on protectionist trade and much more government control of the economy. A choice of disasters again.

>>>He sounds protectionist on trade, but I think that is just an opening bid in his deal making.

He’s quite plain and forceful on it. People tend to believe Trump will only do the things he says that they want him to do and not the ones they don’t. They even read into his incoherent rambling the precise policy they want.

>>>he just wants to put some pressure on nations such as China and Japan to remove their barriers against our exports. Nothing wrong with that.

As you know, trade barriers only hurt the countries that impose them. A president threatening to shoot our economy if they don’t stop is wrong on at least two levels.

On national defense, he’s turned on a dime on Syria/ISIS, and shot off his mouth proposing violations of the Geneva Convention concerning targeting civilians. I definitely do not trust him as CIC. (No, I don’t trust Hillary either.)

>>>who knows, he could be a pleasant surprise.

I hope so. Even more, I hope we don’t have to find out. :)

Thanks very much for your reply and I wish you well.

My point is not that DT might be able to pull some votes from minority communities, it is, what is he saying to get elected, and what will his governing priorities be? He promises more than a dem! The positions that he is advocating, irrespective of his promises about the borders, are straight out of the dem platform.

I don’t think that Romney threw the election. He didn’t inspire the base, and the MSM crucified him with that 47% comment. We crucified him for being a moderate.

Don’t think that DT is going to get a pass from the MSM. The hits will start and keep on coming as soon as the general starts, and there is lots of great stuff for them to refocus the narrative on Donald.

If you think the GOPe is bad...

The GOPe Trump would be... an incoherent rambling autocratic mess.

You did not answer the question. Are you saying you will vote for Hillary by staying Home?

Nobody cares about Trump's deeds before he ran for President. We care about those politicians who lied to and deceived voters while in office.

Trump's colorful background makes him uniquely qualified to start getting to sewage out ofDC.

Understand your disillusion, but the gloom and doom and give-up before you try is self-fulfilling!

"Give up before I try" - what exactly??? VOTE?? An exercise in both futility and insanity if you think that is how you stop a corrupt tyranny.

How about trying to think outside the box

How about recognizing reality?

True, they have voter fraud and many other dirty tricks to try to fix the election results, but that is only when we are divided, dont have the resolve and determination, and dont act strategically

So rigged, manipulated and fixed election results only happen when Republicans are not united???????? Oh that's funny right there.

Voting is still the most powerful tool we have

In an era of institutional voter fraud and fixed election results??? You cannot possibly be that ignorant, or clearly you have an acute case of Normalcy Bias.

Our goal is - if anything, just to show them we do have more power and resolve to topple their agendas!

If you think that entails and is limited to going to the polls and voting out institutionalized tyranny - you have no understanding whatsoever of where this nation finds itself, or what is actually required to stop tyranny.

This new president that the GOPe, democrats and media don’t want, will have to answer to the massive number of voters who voted him in! We can then hope and try to bring about changes for the better.

Another glaring example of you people thinking the Executive is now a monarchy or a Dictatorship - and you are certain YOUR KING will change a corrupt institutional tyranny as long as he is YOUR KING and not THEIR KING. Gotcha.

And some people wonder how it is possible we lost the Republic. Case. In. Point. Above.

Can anyone be worse than obola, or hillbilly or Sanders?

Uhmmmm, if you are going to where I think you are - just know that I have repented of voting for the lesser of two evils and expecting that is somehow going to reverse the downward spiral we are on.

So VOTE, in the primary, in the General, for Trump, just to show them we can choose our president!

I'm not sig-heiling your chosen political savior.

If you vote for Cruz, beware that the RATS and media WILL attack his ineligibility and put our next nightmare hillbilly into the WH!

And yet another example of 'Only Trump Can Save Us'.

No thanks. I want no part of the irrational zealotry of 2008 resurgent on the GOP side.

Fight strategically. Drastic times call for drastic measures!

You are lying to yourself. You don't believe the actual truth of that statement beyond yanking a lever for Trump.

History teaches that tyranny and institutionalize corruption cannot be stopped via civil means.

But you go ahead and keep lying to yourself. I know it helps folks like you sleep sound at night.

Trumpty Dumpty is more annoying every day. I cannot stand the man.

I still hope that Ted Cruz will get the nomination.

However, should the worst happen, I have appointed a guardian to sedate me and drive me to the polls, playing a tape of Hillary cackling all the way.

That might do it.

So, who's staying home in November if Trump's the nominee?

If you don't want to vote for Trump, them vote to cancel out someone who is voting against your principles.

I guess the argument boils down to these few questions:

His colorful background?

I care about the background and the principles of anyone that I elect as a representative, and most especially as the Chief Executive of the US. How else is one supposed to make an informed choice if not on the basis of what that person has stood for, and what their life choices reveal about them.

There was a time when being a conservative stood for values. Trump embodies only the values of the low information, reality tv voter, and I know, you are none of those things.

You are, however, most definitely not a conservative

I also think Trump will have far more trouble in a national election than his supporters believe.

He is supremely detestable and an unfunny joke.

Why are we intent on marching over the cliff singing I Love Trump?

Who?> Idiots that claim to be conservative but aren’t. Conservatives care for this country and don’t try to harm it by allowing Hillary to be elected.

Those so-called Christian Evangelicals in 2012 that stayed home allowed Obama to be elected. Not conservatives at all. They allowed their country to be harmed on purpose.

Rubio would be just as bad! Ryan is out there talking about how Republicans must stop Obama’s agenda after he already funded it into next year. Rubio will be a rubber stamp for Ryan and his TPP, more dangerous than Trump.
