Pro-Cruz super PAC uses Confederate flag against Trump

WEST COLUMBIA, S.C.-- A super PAC backing Ted Cruz is running robocalls and radio ads that remind voters Donald Trump supported removing the Confederate flag from South Carolina statehouse grounds. "Trump talks about our flag like it's a social disease," intones the spot, which is playing on about 30 radio stations in South Carolina, as well as a few in neighboring states. It includes clips of Trump saying, "Put it in the museum, let it go." "That's Donald Trump supporting Nikki Haley removing the battle flag from the Confederate memorial in Columbia," says the spot, which is paid for by Courageous Conservatives PAC and is part of a $25,000 ad buy. Rick Shaftan, a spokesman for the PAC, said that since "Donald Trump supporters are the most opposed to political correctness," it was a relevant point to make in the hours before the South Carolina primary, where most polls show Trump holding a substantial lead over Cruz. The Cruz campaign has disavowed the spot. "This is from someone not affiliated in any way with our campaign, and it is not something we condone," tweeted Brian Phillips, Cruz's rapid response director. Cruz last summer said he would leave the issue of whether the flag should come down -- which it eventually did in the wake of a shooting at an African American church -- to the people of South Carolina. But the Texas senator ignored reporters who on Friday asked whether he supported that outcome. "His position is the same, this was a decision for state leaders to make," Cruz spokeswoman Catherine Frazier said. State Sen. Lee Bright and state Rep. Bill Chumley, who were announced last spring as two of Cruz's state chairs here, were vocal opponents of bringing the flag down. "People like Donald Trump are always butting their noses into other people's business," the ad says, going on to add, "On Saturday, send Donald Trump and his New York values back to Manhattan. Ted Cruz for president. Let's take our country back. Now. Before it's too late."

Trump has the general election electability of Bozo the Clown with the ethics and charm of Ken Lay.

Yes, you should be able to fly a Nazi flag as well as a Confederate flag. Being completely serious.

The polls show that Trump does not draw enough from the other side to even beat Cruz, let alone one of the D’s. Trump is drawing some support from Dems who are just looking at the universe of Republican candidates. Once the contest becomes Trump vs Sanders or Clinton, that crossover support evaporates.

A good example is the comments made by Jimmy Carter. He obviously did not endorse Trump, but he did say that he preferred Trump over Cruz. That would not carry over to the general.

The conflict is in your reasoning. Cruz dinged Trump for getting involved in a state issue, and choosing sides. There is no way to stretch that to mean Cruz supported keeping the flag, it’s just another cheap shot at Cruz based on nothing logical.

Confederate flag against Trump, LesDowrey wrote:
I don’t have to taste poison to know it’s poison. It’s common sense. If you honestly don’t believe PAC’s and candidates coordinate with each other then that’s your choice. I will stand with the silent majority of Middle Class Americans who know a rip off when they see one.

Waving the middle class flag is not an answer.
I asked you if you as apparently Trump does, feel the Confederate battle flag and monuments should not be displayed on public grounds. I also asked you to prove your claims of suspicions about PACs

Really? That's the best you got? So using your logic, a private citizen should not be allowed to express an opinion on something that doesn't happen in his/her state. As far as I know, Trump never funded a group to aid in its' removal or issued a federal order to have it taken down. Hence we have a private citizen taking a stand and issuing an opinion.

I'm not buying your reason why the ad was made. The obvious purpose of the ad was to portray Trump as anti-flag and appeal to the confederate flag supporters that Ted stands with them. If Cruz supported the removal of the flag, why make the ad? Unless he is using the issue as a way to garner votes (pandering). And if he is upset that Trump "got involved" in a state issue by expressing his opinion as a private citizen, he is not that good of a constitutionalist.

Trump has the general election electability of Bozo the Clown with the ethics and charm of Ken Lay.

And yet Cruz can't come close to beating him. Near Rubio in SC and barely beat Jeb in NH.

Since the flag came down, I have not heard many complaints from the people in South Carolina. No articles, no protests, nothing. Not sure why, but that is also a truth.

Do you honestly trust PACS? I don’t. I don’t need to proof to prove suspicion. Yes, I’m suspicious of PACs as you should be as well. Are you not?

There have been several Confederate flag cases in TX, I’m wondering where he stood on those.

First thing, Cruz didn’t make the ad.

But, yes, a private citizen has the right to express an opinion on a given subject. That does NOT insulate said private citizen for negative response to his opinion. This freedom to speak one’s mind goes both ways. So whoever made the ad is well within their rights to criticize Trump for his position, don’t you think?

But how many southerners are seething inside?

They know that any one who would dare join an organized protest would be labeled a KKKlanner and would be tarred and feathered and “lynched” by the propaganda organs.

That is also the truth.

If they had a vote is SC to take down the flag, which side do you think would win?

I would hope they would vote to keep it up but I am not 100 percent sure anymore. The country is broken from weakness and political correctness. That is number 1 reason why I am voting for Trump. We can not longer be afraid to speak our minds especially if we have truth on our side. The entire country needs an overhaul.

I used to be a Trump supporter for the same reason you state. He was extremely effective at making himself heard, and taking a wrecking ball to the liberal propaganda organs (the media) and political correctness and anyone who gets in his way - he’s a great salesman - you want to believe what he says, you want to believe he will make America great again.

I liked Cruz a lot also because he’s truly grounded in conservatism - it’s part of his being. I trust him more. But he didn’t quite have the same ability to steamroll our adversaries the way Trump does.

The thing that started make me rethink Trump was his inconsistencies and the way he could turn on people that he just said he liked. One day the establishment is the enemy, the next day he’s in love with Pelosi, Reid, Schumer and McConnell. And the thing that truly turned me off is his use of the same demagogue language that the left uses and even worse. Stuff about leaving people dying in the streets, Bush lied, Bush knew about 9/11, defunding parenthood one day and then saying that they do wonderful things. And on and on.

Bottom line I have no clue of what he’s going to do, because what he says today, he could easily change tomorrow. And us conservatives could easily become his enemies and then he can just as effectively use his wrecking ball against us. So one of his strength could become a weapon he uses against us.

So I’m back with Cruz. I’m much more confident that he will do what he says - he has proven that against some very stiff opposition. Also he’s getting better at dishing it out, as he has proven with his recent tiffs against Trump. So he will also fare well against whoever the democrats select.

The ideal would be a Cruz with a Trump personality.

I could get behind Cruz if I could get a written guarantee he would be able to win the general and work with Congress. Both are really debatable right now. I know everyone hates Congress (I do to) but he has to at least work with the Republicans and do you think that McConnell is going to work with Cruz after he called him a liar on the Senate Floor? Regardless of how he feels about McConnell, he could have called him a liar in his office or something. I agree Cruz is grounded in conservatism, but that “win at all cost” is off putting. Maybe as President, if he gets it, I would appreciate that. I totally agree Cruz with a Trump personality or even a Rubio personality (without the squishiness - changing mind) would be a vast improvement. I guess he can't help who he is. His wife seems to think he is really nice and funny.....wish he would show more of that.
