I don’t care either. The situation is desperate. We need someone to reverse the Decline and Fall of Western Civilization, and he’s the only who is able and willing to do it, and he knows what’s going on.

A month ago Trump supporters on Freerepublic were declaring that he was a conservative. In the last week, we have more and more Trump supporters coming out and saying they don’t care that he isn’t a conservative.
I ask as sober, serious question to the Trump supporters here. If you came to the conclusion in your own mind that Donald Trump was not guided by conservative principles, would that cause your support for him to waver?
If not, what would it honestly take for your support to waver?
You don’t have to respond, I just want you to ask yourself that question.

I’d prefer Cruz but without Trump Jethro would already be enthroned, so I’ll take either one.

Trump is a philosophically unmoored political opportunist who would trash the broad conservative ideological consensus within the GOP in favor of a free-floating populism with strong-man overtones.
Why hasn't any other GOP candidate come out in favor of building a border wall? If Trump can get a wall accomplished, he will be the greatest president in my lifetime, without question. Just the fact that he's brought the topic of stopping illegal immigration into the political conversation of a presidential campaign means he's done more for conservatism than any candidate since Reagan.

And therin lies the problem.
Seems to be the attitude taken by many Freepers as well.
Let us not forget many of the worst leaders in history have been populist/nationalists which Trump has self admitted he is.

Look at Ducking Donald dodge and deflect when asked about his views on late-term abortion. And this was on January 28 of this year!
Trump freaks out when asked about abortion again
And you wonder why conservatives do not trust this arrogant clown??

THere are a finite number of people who call themselves “conservative” and they are split between Cruz, Trump, and a few others. Those votes are already locked-up for the most part, except for those who will just not vote at all.
But there are many independents, moderates, “silents”, libertarians, moderate Democrats, etc who are never going to wear the “conservative” label but who do like and support many of the ideas Trump is promoting. They want practial problem-solvers, not Harvard lawyers spewing theory and ideology.

For me, there isn’t an ideological purity test... but there is a reverence for the Constitution test and a rule of law test. I trust Ted Cruz on those. Although I know where Trump stands on immigration, I don’t know where he stands on the rest of his prospective job description.

When Cruz, Rubio and Trump gave their announcement speeches to run for president, the ONLY one of them that sounded ‘conservative’ was Donald Trump. Cruz sounded like John Lennon, asking dozens of times for us to ‘imagine’.....
