I ALWAYS carry a .357, holstered, in the woods.
Always. Even in camp.

Need a good retention strap.
Lest it gets lost in the river.

Two-legged monsters are the worst kind. But I have two questions:
1. What are you fishing for?
2. What do bears eat?
If the answer to both questions is the same, pack.

Carrying is just like a tool in the toolbox.

In Kansas, before we got constitutional carry, you were allowed to conceal carry while hunting or fishing without a permit.

I used to bring along practically my entire arsenal along for fishing trips. Then, that tragic day that the canoe capsized.

you don't need no gun in the woods. We's harmless.

I used to take my boats for gun rides.
Or was it the other way around?

Whenever I went fishing, either in a boat or from the bank, I was packing. Particularly for offshore fishing, some of those fish just need to be shot before coming into the boat.

My good fishing buddy Chuck passed away. He was a 6 foot, 240, Black guy. He carried a .38.
The Tar Heels up on the Skagit are racist as hell, plus he’d been stalked by a cougar one afternoon, and had difficulty getting back to his rig.

From the linked article:
"THERE ARE DANGEROUS people out in the woods..."
There are dangerous people wherever you go. Just because your (editorial you) previous experiences have been idyllic doesn't mean that the next trip won't have surprises.

I pack because of two-legged predators.
I regularly do a father-daughter camp out sponsored by our shul. Not real camping — tents with easy access to electricity at state campsites. Probably a group of 20-30 dads and 100 daughters.
At least once a year, a group of mouth breathers or arabs come up and try to harass us.

I purchased a firearm and obtained a carry permit because of an incident at one of my local lakes.
Found out carrying a firearm on Corps of Engineers property, meaning my local lakes, is prohibited and is a federal offense regardless of state laws!
Go figure!

Yep thinks haven’t changed since I lived in a remote place in the PNW in the late 70s & 80s - crooks love the woods - no law, and lots of native food.

Unless one had been fishing with my Uncle Morris. A large water moccasin dropped into our boat while fishing the Hatchie River. We had holes in the boat and a dead water moccasin.

Not a bad tool tool should you have an altercation with a bear, as well....

WE never go in the woods without a weapon or two. The AT here in GA is just lousy with tweakers. You never know when one will appear out of nowhere.
