Mail truck left open Driver....busy shopping
Meshuge Mikey ^ | November 7, 2015 | self

"I just encountered" a fully loaded U.S.mail truck...windows wide open no driver in sight.

After ascertaining there was no driver in the back of the vehicle, I waited ten mintes while calling the P,O,...to no avail.

The driver as it turns out.. was in the local grocery store shopping.

On his return to the vehicle,...I asked him about leaving the mail accessible and unattended. He shrugged it off.

His nonchalance was a tad premature.. as is have photos of his unattended U,S,P,S, vehicle.

Local law enforcement says they don't have jurisdiction.

Well,.....at least he won't be delivering any vulnerable mail on Sunday.

,Anybody here know the extent of his liability legally speaking?

Thank you.

M.M.

“It’s 5 years in federal prison for mail tampering. Not many would be willing to risk that.”

That was my first thought too. Even people in LaHood (a little transportation secretary lingo, for those of you in Rio Linda) know THE LAW.

They are more than welcome to try to steal granny’s check (even if they’re all electronic these days), but they risk some SERIOUS JAIL TIME, much more time than, say, killing an 8 year old black kid in Chicago.

Yawn. Call us when he does something really bad, like supporting Donald Trump.

Sounds like you’re pretty much of a little bitch trying to get somebody in trouble.

Hey, at least he's not pimping a blog or anything, right?

The creed mentions rain, snow, heat, and gloom of night.

It made no promises about grocery shopping, so no problem.

I don't know about liability but he is a total JERK for leaving all that mail unattended. Robbing the mail is a federal offense and a felony. Most people won't TOUCH it.
However, that's not the point, is it?
He sounds like a lazy jerk to me.

May he get the SHORT end of the turkey wishbone break.

I deliver mail. This is totally unacceptable although there isn’t much that can be done due to union leaders. If it was a postmaster or supervisor who saw and documented this, it might be different.
If my vehicle is unlocked, even while not having mail inside, but parked in the PO parking lot, I can be fired.
I suggest you contact the postmaster general. The office will get a good warning

I have a “paper trail” a digital photography trail at any rate that shows the vehicle parked with the windows down and driverless...and the vechicl number clearly ,arked on the back

I’d have loved to have seen the drivers..face..when a local cop who I flagged down.. drove by.

Thank you.

>> at least he won’t be delivering any vulnerable mail on Sunday <<

How do you know? In my area, the local USPS trucks are out on the roads every Sunday now — mostly delivering packages for Amazon, so it seems.

the photos will doubtless come in handy as will my contact with local PD who actually saw the guy come out of the store....

they dont have jurisdiction to act...but they can sure back up...on this one.

Its nice to have reliable witnesses!!

I once worked for the USPS for a short time....

if I had pulled a stunt like this it would have been far shorter..that I knew for certain...
