In an item after the Oregon shootings, I quoted a reader from Florida saying that if you owned more than 10 guns yourself, you might be considered to have an arsenal. And just now on TV I heard the British father of the Oregon murderer asking why anyone, including his son, would want or need so many guns.
Yesterday I quoted a reader who said, on the contrary, ten or more guns could be a perfectly reasonable collection for perfectly non-threatening citizens to have.
On the how much is enough point, responses from two readers. First, on the similarities and differences between gun nuts and other types of nuts, a reader argues that there really is something different in how gun owners relate with the rest of us.
Your correspondent argues that you can own ten guns without being a "gun nut", then proceeds to list an inventory that he feels makes his case.
Let's try to approach on different collections. Suppose I owned ten motorcycles of different types. Perhaps a cafe racer, an enduro bike, a big touring bike, and so on. Would that make me a motorcycle nut? Probably. You're a runner (I think). Maybe you own ten or more pairs of running shoes. [JF note: Over the years, yes. And lets not get into old computers, or types of beer.] I'm sure you can come up with a better list than I can, but I can imagine shoes for street running, dirt running, trail running, training, racing, and so on.
Does that make you a running shoe nut. Yup....

I’d say if you’re asking that question you’re definitely a nut. Why do you care what someone else owns? Obviously brainlessly shouting of moronic comments blathering their life away.
You can never have enough guns and ammo. Period.
I had one idiot in another site tell me that the 2nd Amendment doesn’t give me the right to own a large capacity magazine or and autoloader .22....
He says when the 2nd Amendment was written, there were only muzzle loaders and THAT is all we can legally have...*LOL*
Can you believe some of these people??????
More than 10? I’m more of a gun “fancier”. That and motorcycles. I have a friend who has more than 30 guitars - some of which have “no legitimate hunting purpose.”
If only my canoe hadn’t tipped over crossing that lake... Now I can’t even participate....
Did you mean “no legitimate strumming purpose?”
I once had a fairly conservative co-worker who didn’t understand why anyone would want dozens of guns. He said he could understand why someone would want a few guns for different kinds of hunting, self defense, etc. but why would someone need that many?
I asked him have you ever collected anything? Stamps, coins, beany babies, whatever? He said, yes. Told him it’s the same with guns. You see something different and cool, you want it. That doesn’t make it an arsenal. If someone has 100 identical new AKs, maybe that’s an arsenal. He said, “Oh, I get it.”
First amendment, therefore, doesn’t apply to any technology newer than a quill pen and parchment paper.
I have 7 Marlin 60’s, that makes me a fan for sure.
There have been many variations over the years.
How many of what objects someone has is none of anybody else’s business.
I have over 13 guns and all of them have killed fewer people than Ted Kennedys Oldsmobile.
My Oldsmobile has never killed anyone, either.
Amen Brother.
I heard of a WW2 vet in western PA who had 900 guns throughout his house when he died.
That is now my goal.
I'm not sure what that means, though I am quite familiar with the meaning of NOYFB! :-)
When you’re kicked out of the service early in basic training you either have a physical problem that they didn’t catch at the physical or more likely, a mental defect of some kind. I know that all the trainees kicked out during my time in basic were fruitloops, not people with regular health problems. They missed me somehow. LOL
Wow...I didn’t make the “nut” threshold...
I only have seven....
Did
Wrong question.
Does having one gun in a gun free zone make me a gun nut?
Wish there were a thumbs up button.
Liberals writing an article that tries to vilify the gun owners with more than ten guns. The constant drum beat of making gun owners out to be outside the norm one of the actions the liberals are using to get gun control. The fact is, the homosexual penis has killed more people than guns have within the US this year.
