What I did on my summer vacation (Travis McGee is back)

Last June, while sailing from Florida to North Carolina, I was able to realize and 20+ year dream and go dive-planing with dolphins in the open Atlantic ocean.

It is not just the sharks. I like to be able to breathe no matter where I am.

There are some videos on Youtube of environmentalists trying to establish tourism in areas where shark fishing has decimated the populations (both coasts of Mexico). The idea is to promote scuba diving in these areas as an alternative fishing for income. They seem to have been pretty successful.

The fishermen now take divers out with their boats to these coral areas with abundant sea life. I can see where your board would be a great alternative for those who didn't want to go through the process of becoming a certified diver to do the scuba thing. And most of these boats, IIRC, have large enough motors to pull 2 to 3 people if equipped with right props.

When something new like this is introduced, people find all kinds of new and interesting ways to put it to practical application. :-)

The underwater camera work was excellent. The board works well. The dolphins and the woman all look like they were born to glide. Really nice video. Admittedly jealous.

That would be nice, if it did find some new niches. Often inventions work like that, and the inventor is surprised.

Thank you for the well organized & detailed information.

There is too much to respond to...so many small details that make it all work, even to the wider notch of the vee cut. That sort of thing came to my own mind...(what there is left of that, or ever was of that).

The nylon tow line info is good too. You are correct, nylon gives a little. Some poly can also, but nylon does it better. It's stronger when wet than it is dry, also. But then you likely already know that, and the loads we are talking about, at 3 to 4 knots are not enough to overwork 3/8 nylon.

Sorry to ramble, but thanks again for all the info. I should bookmark this thread. Your information is valuable. Glad you had fun, and friends to share it all with.

As fall has arrived here in the midwest, watching your video makes me long to be near the water! Great video and thank you for sharing.

I wish I was still out there.

I don't doubt it, that was truly time well-spent. Sailing photos are the best - going to put some more on FB or Photobucket?

Amazing what goes on in their huge brains. It is great you could share their world with them. Just amazing. What beautiful creatures. God outdid himself.

Yes. Flippers for hands have stopped their tool-making, but otherwise, they are masters of their realm.

Epic sunrise at sea.

You are never as in tune with the sun, moon and stars as when you are out on the ocean with a 360* horizon.

We used to have boats and fished off shore in the Gulf of Mexico. We would leave Freeport Texas at 3 or 4am, running slow till daylight then hook it up till we got to our fishing spot. Fish till late afternoon and then head home. Sun rise and sun set on the water was fantastic!

Yep. When you are on a boat for the dawn watch, you are hyper aware of every slight change from dark to dawn to daylight. Nothing like it on the land.

I happened to come across this and it made me think about you.
-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3kImL2gDkI
-
Got out of town on a boat going to Southern islands,
Sailing a reach before a following sea,
She was making for the trades on the outside,
And the downhill run to Papeete.

Off the wind on this heading lies the Marquesas,
We got eighty feet of the waterline, nicely making way,
In a noisy bar in Avalon I tried to call you,
But on a midnight watch I realized why twice you ran away.

Think about...
Think about how many times I have fallen,
Spirits are using me, larger voices calling,
What Heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten.

I have been around the world,
Looking for that woman girl,
Who knows love can endure,
And you know it will.

When you see the Southern Cross for the first time,
You understand now why you came this way,
Cause the truth you might be running from is so small,
But it’s as big as the promise, the promise of a coming day.

So I’m sailing for tomorrow my dreams are a dying,
And my love is an anchor tied to you tied with a silver chain,
I have my ship and all her flags are a flying,
She is all that I have left, and music is her name.

Think about...
Think about how many times I have fallen,
Spirits are using me larger voices calling,
What Heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten.

I have been around the world,
Looking for that woman girl,
Who knows love can endure,
And you know it will, and you know it will.

So we cheated and we lied and we tested,
And we never failed to fail, it was the easiest thing to do,
You will survive being bested,
Somebody fine will come along make me forget about loving you,
And the southern cross.
