The White House on Thursday offered condolences for the “tragic loss” of pilgrims killed in a stampede near Mecca in Saudi Arabia.
“The United States expresses its deepest condolences to the families of the hundreds of Hajj pilgrims killed and hundreds more injured in the heartbreaking stampede,” said Ned Price, a National Security Council spokesman. More than 700 people were killed and 800 were injured in the stampede in Mina on the Islamic holy day of Eid al-Adha, when millions of Muslims make their pilgrimage, or hajj, to Mecca, according to CNN.
“As Muslims around the world continue to celebrate Eid al-Adha, we join you in mourning the tragic loss of these faithful pilgrims,” Price said.
The incident attracted international headlines, as disturbing images of bodies at the site circulated on the Internet.
The stampede is believed to have occurred when two groups of pilgrims met en route to a “stoning the devil” ceremony.
