Well, this is something you don’t see every day. According to a new report out of Consumer Reports, the Tesla Model S P85D, all-wheel-drive electric sedan, performed “better in our tests than any other car ever has, earning a perfect road-test score.”
Actually, it did better than that, scoring 103 points in a scoring system that, “by definition,” doesn’t go past 100.
Among the many reasons it scored so remarkably high, says the outlet: its “brutally quick” acceleration (the car soars from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds); better braking and handling than the standard Model S (which also receives high marks from Consumer Reports); and its stunning energy efficiency. Consumer Reports notes the car gets the equivalent of 87 miles per gallon.
Of course, the car isn’t perfect, says the report. Its 200-plus mile range can be a concern on a long drive if a charging station isn’t nearby. (Consumer Reports clearly hasn’t heard of Bjørn Nyland, a programmer who recently drove 452.8 miles on a single charge in a P85D by cruising at 25 miles per hour.)
It’s also louder than the Model S, less opulent than other luxury vehicles, and too expensive for most of us, with a price tag of $127,820.
Still, Consumer Reports is calling it an “automotive milepost” and a “powerful statement of American startup ingenuity.”

Consumer Reports is not an organization I very much trust, having been known to play politics with products but this is really unprecedented

Lets see.

Government subsidized. Check.
Yea! A perfect score!
And Tesla is losing $4K on each car sold.

As for the tesla, anybody wonder what the repair costs are gonna be? If you can find a master electrian/computer wizard to fix it. I notice some of the local casino’s have installed charging stations for the e-cars around town. Still waiting for the complimentary gas pumps. And waiting, and waiting............
I certainly have the means to buy one...just don’t have the ego to match it. To put it differently, I need a car that’s PRACTICAL to drive (i.e., lots of gas stations to choose from), rather than a near-useless object to try to one-up my friends with. So I’ll stick to Honda/Toyota’s, thank you.
But I do realize that people buy cars for other reasons.
Tesla, like Apple, has a HUGE marketing and sales department. Their engineering, not so much.

Musk predicts the technology for self driving cars will be available in two or three years anyway so might as well hold off for that.
The car goes 250 miles under optimum conditions, you can’t drive it anywhere there is not a charging station, to replace battery is about $12,000 which will HUGELY lower resale value and the fit, finish and opulence factor leave much to be desired in an $85,000 car.
Strong bias towards this car has been evident since it came out. For this kind of money I can buy a maxed out benz e550 4matic. It will get close to 30mpg hiway with v8 power and much, much more luxury than the Muskmobile.

It’s range that is the big negative.
Either up the range by 2.5 times or a 5 minute recharge, similar to filling with gas.
I have a friend that can’t drive his Tesla to the beach from Raleigh, approx 140 mi.
Not enough range to get back and questionable as to charging there.
Again these idiots get it wrong. It isn't range that is the problem it is long recharge times. 200 mile range is fine if it only takes five minutes to recharge.
