TGIF, so I thought I'd take a little break from ATTAC (all things Trump and Clinton) and turn to a lighter topic. In almost 70 years of network television, the two most popular genres by far have been westerns and police. Doctor/medical dramas have always entertained audiences. But I wanted to see which military themed TV series Freepers like, and/or remember most.
Another vote for F-Troop.
But a second for Hogan’s Heros too.
Gomer Pyle wasn’t bad. Jim Nabors pointed out that more than 3/4s (if I remember right) of the guys marching with him in the opening were killed in Vietnam.
He doesn’t forget.
Well, all of my favorites have already been mentioned but for one.

short title clip
ran 1956-1957, so I was nine. Had horses, cavalry, lancer charges so my age cohort really liked it. We tied handkerchiefs and bandanas to the bamboo poles that came with rugs and charged around on our bikes for that time. Good thing there were no stray dogs in the neighborhood.
Oh, add Rin-Tin-Tin
Yeah. This. I want to change my vote to this. I still dream of Jeannie.
Did the title trailer trigger any recollection? Series didn’t last long. At the time Gunga Din was broadcast a lot.
Maybe a lack of bamboo rug poles in your neighbor hood?
;>)
Excellent, will check it out.
My dad knew one of the guys in the company, was the father of one of his friends. No mention in Ambrose’s book, I’d imagine because he broke his leg on the DDay drop, and that ended his war.
Dad said that his buddies took his weapons - they didn’t have any - hid him, and left him with a grenade to defend himself. It was a different time.
If you remember..Freemail me and let me know how you liked the book..
Checking it out right now.
I’d imagine that this gentleman would have been one of the original Toccoa men, since he jumped on DDay. But I don’t know that. Will do some reading!
Enjoy!!
Ya' think!?
Wow! Never would have guessed that. I thought early 20s maybe. Then again I was ages 8-10 during the 1965-67 series run. But I probably remember it best from the reruns, when I was in my early-mid teens.
The Wackiest Ship in the Army
War and Remembrance (mini-series). I haven’t seen The Winds of War.
Foyle’s War
F Troop and McHale’s Navy.
Victory at Sea, hands down.
Saving this thread...
Loved The Unit even though I almost quit watching the pilot when the affair was revealed, but the takedown of the hijacked plane was so cool I decided to stick with it & was disappointed when the series ended. Instead of an opening theme song, they had a cadence in the earlier seasons.
There was a short-lived Benjamin Bratt show called The E Ring (referring to the Pentagon) that might’ve been good if it had been given a chance. Maybe Netflix has it.
Did you see she passed away on thursday ?
No, I didn't know that. Sad.
And weird, because several months ago something made me wonder what the actress who played the young daughter on the Beverly Hillbillies was up to these days (Elly May Clampett/Donna Douglas). Hadn't thought about her for decades. Wasn't even a big fan of the show, or of her (didn't dislike her for any reasons). Anyway, turned out she had died just the day before. Now this.
