But, the president continued, I dont think God wants us to stop there at just taking flags down.
Perhaps it causes us to examine what were doing to cause some of our children to hate. Perhaps it softens hearts towards those lost young men, tens and tens of thousands caught up in the criminal-justice system and lead us to make sure that that systems not infected with bias, that we embrace changes in how we train and equip our police so that the bonds of trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve make us all safer and more secure, he said.
Maybe we now realize the way a racial bias can infect us even when we dont realize it so that were guarding against not just racial slurs but were also guarding against the subtle impulse to call Johnny back for a job interview but not Jamal, so that we search our hearts when we consider laws to make it harder for some of our fellow citizens to vote.
Obama also resurrected his calls for more gun control, stressing for too long, weve been blind to the unique mayhem that gun violence inflicts upon this nation.
The vast majority of Americans, the majority of gun owners want to do something about this. We see that now, he said. And Im convinced that by acknowledging the pain and loss of others, even as we respect the traditions, ways of life that make up this beloved country, by making the moral choice to change, we express Gods grace.
The president added it would be a betrayal of everything Reverend Pinckney stood for, I believe, if we allow ourselves to slip into a comfortable silence again.

What if Johnny is well spoken, well educated; and Jamal is a smart ass?
They don't know and don't care, as long as EBT cards work.
I know that, but he has the GALL to say what he said?
How come Barack got the majority of votes, but John and Mitt didn’t?
Excellent point.
Whenever Obama says “God”, he means “I”.
“God impulse”, lately also taken up by some SC justices.
This was a eulogy? Isn’t a eulogy supposed to be about the deceased, who as a prestigious minister and State Senator didn’t lose out in life.
He understands Jamal because the president did not get his job by qualification either.
I can't call Jamal back.
Racism sucks. Being falsely accused of racism sucks, too. Period.
Wasn’t it a d#mned Jamal that slaughtered an entire family in their home not long ago? Hadn’t the worthless creep worked for that guy? Something like that. Think it’s best if Jamal stays in his own torn up neighborhood.
Most savvy business owners know that if they hire Jamal, there’s a good probability he’ll be a low-achieving screw-off who cannot then be fired because of “racial discrimination” which will then have the “Just-Us” department all over Mr. business owner’s ass.
Jamal’s self esteem comes from his relationship with his father.
“We” can do nothing about that. “We” already perpetuated Jamal’s miserable self image by paying his equally emotionally damaged mother to whelp fatherless children in exchange for a few moments of feeing special to a man.
I thought it was the government’s role to get Jamal a job. Government fail, if Jamal isn’t working.
Actually neither will get a call back because Juan got the job off the books for alot less money.
“Most savvy business owners know that if they hire Jamal, theres a good probability hell be a low-achieving screw-off who cannot then be fired because of racial discrimination which will then have the Just-Us department all over Mr. business owners ass.”
Right. Like I said, the president identifies with Jamal.
Black parents need stop handicapping their kids with names like Jamal, Dehawn, Teneshia, etc.
>>> This was a eulogy?
Obama can’t help hisself, with national spotlight on him.
