Cooter from the hit TV show "The Dukes of Hazzard", weighed in on the Confederate flag discussion, saying he will not change a thing with his business and will continue to sell Confederate flags.
The story has been trending nation-wide in light of last week's tragedy in Charleston where nine people were shot and killed inside a church. Since the accused killer, Dylan Roof, was allegedly seen on a web page holding a Confederate flag, the debate over the true meaning of the flag has been thrown into question.
Ben Jones, who played 'Cooter' on The Dukes of Hazzard and currently owns Cooter's Place in Gatlinburg, said the flag's original meaning is not one of hatred and supremacy.
"This is an American symbol of independence, of rebellion, yes, but of a spirit also of a nation a country, a region, the south that pulled itself back up from total destruction," Jones said.
Jones then went deeper and said he despises anyone who doesn't see the flag as a positive symbol of American history and uses the flag as a tool of race superiority. He said his stores will continue to sell the Confederate flag, and Confederate flag merchandise, because he knows his stores represent what the flag truly stands for.
"We're not going to change a thing at Cooter's. Ever. We know who we are, we're good people, we're not racist. We love everybody and we see that symbol as very, very positive. And we despise people who don't. I despise people who use those symbols for racist or white supremacist purposes," Jones said.
“.......Dylan Roof, was allegedly seen on a web page holding a Confederate flag,.................”
He was stating his political affiliation as a Democrat.
Well that’s it. I couldn’t wait to hear Cooter’s opinion on this. My day is complete! :)
Does sound like this actor has his head on straight.

I want to visit the Boss Hogg store.
“He was stating his political affiliation as a Democrat.”
More than you know. The old communist used to run against Newt Gingrich for Congress.
Good for Cooter. However, it was not a rebellion. George Washington led a rebellion. The confederates just wanted to go their separate ways. They never tried to overthrow the government.
On Facebook, I have “liked” the Dukes of Hazzard page and you can imagine (predictably so) that a great many people are very upset over the current characterization of the Confederate flag and have expressed such views on that page.
I’m glad that I bought my first two seasons of Dukes on DVD (have one or a couple of episodes taped off TNN from a number of years back as well) when I did, since I’ve read comments here in the past about peoples’ concerns about movies or TV shows being censored or even banned because of a vocal minority and that that show could easily be such a target for that sort of thing. As an example, remember when “Happy Days” originally had “Rock Around the Clock” by Bill Haley as it’s theme song for the first two seasons? Now, the DVD releases have the later theme plastered onto it because of potential copyright infringement issues with the Bill Haley song. “WKRP in Cincinnati” episodes are now edited for the same reason.
They edit the crap out of the old time shows. If the woman’s skirt was too short and revealing they edit the whole scene.
Just now ordered a Confederate battle flag shower curtain from Cooter’s place.
This is an American symbol of independence
no, its a Confederate symbol of independence. Its an emblem which represents the Conferate States of America not the United States of America.
I gained a modicum of respect for "Cooter" when during the Clinton impeachment hearings, he steadfastly condemned ol' Bill.
He said: "Clinton LIED. Period."
the moment we find out that Roof was hearing voices from the Confederate flag which told him to kill people, then it’ll make sense to start talking about getting rid of it.
until then, it’s a piece of cloth attached to American history.
deal with it.
Cooter has far more sense than most of Congress and of any liberal.
its not the flags fault, why punish it by banning it...
Flag suppliers are refusing to sell the Confederate flag under pressure, so he may need to build a whole new supply chain. Will spun polyester suppliers sell to them, etc.
