Pope Francis, climate change...and America's mass murder epidemic (Hurl warning)
The Philadelphia Inquirer's Attytood Blog ^ | June 21, 2015 | Will Bunch

Posted on 06/22/2015 10:12:48 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Last week was a hard one to fully process for adult-ADD-addled news junkie like me. A momentous and arguably uplifting event -- Pope Francis' encyclical on climate change, a powerful document that folks may still be talking about in the year 2525, if Man (and Woman) are still alive -- was drowned out, at least in this country, by by the sound of gunfire and the manifestation of raw hate that occurred in Charleston. (And who exactly was Rachel Dolezal again?)

The tragedy of Charleston and its "Mother Bethel" church absolutely needs to stay on the front burner of the national conversation -- crossing the the hot wires of how we choose to remember America's racist history and how we struggle to cope with our violent present. But Francis' remarkable statement on the environment also demands a second reading -- one that makes it worth pondering whether the dark roots of America's addiction to oil and our epidemic of mass murders, in fact, deeply overlap.

Here's how. In his encyclical, Pope Francis does the world a valuable service by acknowledging the science of global warming -- the same science that's accepted by more 98 percent of the world's climatologists yet denied by millions, many of them people of faith. But what's striking is that he doesn't just frame this problem in pure kilowatts, as a matter of energy efficiency. Instead, Francis is a spiritual leader who sees a spiritual sickness in a culture that can't even address the crisis -- a culture that venerates freedom but promotes isolation, of consumerist humans unable to appreciate a common good, let alone act on it....

The Medici were at least capitalists-—bankers I believe. They were also great sponsors of the arts and education. I’ll take them any day of the week over Pope Che Guevara.

Agreed.

Pope Che is at least as dangerous as the Rules for Radicals Alinskyite who now occupies 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

Pope could even more dangerous. BHO is on his way out. The Pope has a lifetime appointment, not subject to impeachment or legislative oversight, or the voters.

The Pope also carries a certain moral authority usually not accorded to American politicians, and BHO’s popularity both here and abroad have been on the decline for a number of years. The Pope remains wildly popular and universally admired from everything I see being reported.

My point wasn’t that they won’t remember the pope’s message in 2525, it was that this particular climate period will not even be remembered as anything remarkable.

I think Jesus would simply be appalled with what the Church has become.

I can see Him now throwing all of the corrupt people out of the Vatican like He did at the Temple.

And He can start at the very top.

What ever happened to the concept, render unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s, render unto God that which is God’s?

It seems to me that the Vatican, especially under the leadership of this Pope is knee deep in politics and ideology. Radical Left ideology.

You should study Papal Infallabilty before you criticize.

You should read Humane Vitae from 1968 an Encyclical predicting the moral world we live in Today. Pope Paul VI had 10k Priest leave the Priesthood inside of 2 years. Everyone mocked him but today he is obviously Correct.

The papal infallibility doctrine came about much later in Church history. It was instituted by Pope Pius IX in the mid 1800s. The same Pope who initiated the dogma that Mary herself was conceived of an immaculate conception.

Fact is popes are human and subject to sin and error just like the rest of us mere mortals.

The Church has survived 2000 years. The Pope is trying to reorganize the Management (Curia).. I don’t believe in Global Warming Cooling or Change.

Pope Francis is looking at life from a different prism like Love your neighbor as yourself. He actually Promotes and Lives the Cardinal Virtues that have been the backbone of Society since Plato and Socrates. The Virtues have been ignored by Todays society we are witnessing a Catastrophic collapse of a moral society.

Pope Francis writing was a Little deeper than Climate Change.

While I tend to agree with this analysis of the Encyclical, it really doesn’t matter anymore. It’s at least a losing battle here (on FR).

Why? Because the Holy Father chose this hot button topic to launch into this alleged “focus” of the Encyclical. He could have chosen other topics that fit nicely in with a concern for the “throwaway culture” namely abortion, euthanasia, or even the use (really abuse) of centralized government to “solve” the problem of poverty. These are all excellent starting points for the exact same kind of discussion he engages in the Encyclical. In other words he could have led off with any (or all) of those to illustrate the points he later raised. But he didn’t, and this is ultimately what makes the work so indefensible, from a (politically) conservative standpoint.

The Pope shouldn’t be talking about or arguing about politics period. He shouldn’t be “liberal” or “conservative” rather he should be Catholic, a Catholic pastor, a Catholic teacher, which is neither “liberal” or “conservative” it’s just Catholic.

I do tend to believe there is much good in the Encyclical, much that is quite useful. But it’s overshadowed by the hot button issue that is “man-made global warming”. That is squarely in the realm of the natural sciences thus by definition NOT “Catholic”. He has needlessly introduced a confounding factor a factor that ultimately distracts from the deep, rich lessons he later brings. And no one need apologize for that other than himself. He should have known better, really. In the very (anti) culture of consumerism he denounces, he should have realized such a topic would get distorted and used by BOTH “sides” really to further their common goal, which is the destruction of the ancient teachings he extols in the letter. Namely, God centered life, in every aspect.

He should have known better that in this truly “throwaway culture” the choice of such controversy would only lead to more confusion and polarization, because one of the symptoms of our disposable attitude towards life is our tendency to focus only on sound bytes and easy-isms, rather than dive into a lesson with a hunger for truth. He even talks about this tendency in the Encyclical yet allows it to get bogged down in this very problem, the problem of distraction, by his choice to announce to the world his opinion about the cause of climate change! How much more distracting could one get! It plays right INTO the sound byte culture he later derides.

I’ll keep him in prayer and still respect his office and him as Pope, but this has really changed my opinion of him. I used to think he might have a clever agenda to wake people up from their slumber in materialism. Now I just think he’s making stuff up as he goes along.

Oh well, he’s at least not a Borgia.

Jesus Christ promised that the Church he founded with Peter (Caiphus) would prevail against the gates of hell until the end of time. He even gave Peter the keys to his Kingdom. In Peters time when a person was given a new name it signified a Promotion of Influence and responsibility. Saul to PAUL and Abram to ABRAHAM and Simon to Peter.

In 1854 Mary was declared immaculately Conceived. She was chosen by God the Father to bring her saviour her son into the world.God the son couldn’t become man in unworthy Manner. Mary was consumated by the Holy spirit where God became man. Soul & Divinity! Even muslims in 6th century recognized only two individual were born naturally without Original sin. Mary & Jesus.

God as Jesus Made a Promise to us I believe he will keep it and has to date.

“...more than anything else, clearly reflects the Pope’s loathing of free market capitalism...”

___________________

I disagree. The vast majority of his encyclical is aimed at the creation of mankind, Life and God’s plan. No Pope is perfect and his understanding of what is meant by FREE market is lacking...but it is not dogma. However, we who are Catholics called to give all he has written prayerful and serious consideration.

Have you read it in its entirety?

*98 percent of the world's climatologists *

98% of the 1250 or so IPCC scammers that were coerced by the UN vs. 31,000 other Scientists that say its a hoax.

The founder of the Weather Channel says its a hoax.

Science itself says man-made Climate Change is a hoax.
Even if I play the part of the papal advocate and pretend that AGW is real...

...the suffering of billions of people, the extreme poverty, death and loss of most of our freedoms is certainly not worth preventing the Earth to heat up another one millionth of a degree over the next 100 years or causing the ocean to raise a half an inch.

Hitler, Mussolini, Peron and Castro were immensely popular in their country and universally. Demagogic populism is the most popular arm to entice and control the masses , and Francis, like Obama; are masters in that art.

No I have not read it in its entirety.

But according to what I have seen so far:

1) The Pope has fully embraced Algore’s globull warming theories.

2) The Pope does not approve of the material success and wealth of the industrial world.

3) The Pope wants to cut down on fossil fuels.

4) The Pope wants to redistribute wealth.

This is my take away. Correct me if I’m wrong. The Pope seems to have little use for the ideas free market capitalism, limited government, individual liberty, or private property. All values which were the bedrock principles of our Founding Fathers.

Exactly. Argentina has long had a fascination and great love for every pathetic and evil political ideology under the sun from Nazism to Communism. This is the political and ideological milieu the Pope comes from and it probably helps explain his seething contempt for limited government, free market capitalism, individual liberty, and private property rights-—values I assume nearly all on FR hold very dearly-—they all seem to be an anathema to the Pope.
