[snip]My mom used to cut chicken, chop eggs and spread butter on bread on the same cutting board with the same knife and no bleach, but we didn't seem to get food poisoning.
Our school sandwiches were wrapped in wax paper in a brown paper bag, not in ice pack coolers, but I can't remember getting e. Coli.
Almost all of us would have rather gone swimming in the lake or at the beach instead of a pristine pool (talk about boring), no beach closures then.

I laughed at your post.
Usually it was straight alcohol at our house or the purple stuff we put on the horses and cows.
We had these steel cups for pole vaulting that had torch cut edge on them. Somehow I slipped on one of these things bare foot and peeled the ball off of my foot at school. Alcohol and a bandage was all it got. Still got the foot. Ball and all more than 50 years later.
Merthiolate was the bad stuff. Felt like you were being cauterized. My dad would say "If it hurts it's killing germs so it's a good thing".
Enjoyed the article and the thread Thanks!
I’m now into gas station sushi.
I read once where a pharmaceutical company spent a fortune making an effective sting free antibiotic. Because it didn’t hurt no one thought it was any good. They put a little alcohol in it just to make it sting and sales picked up.
I still remember that foul orange stuff. Just mom grabbing the red bottle made me wince....
Yup nasty stuff. but it did leave your skin a cool pink orange color
He must have been in the same infantry company as my dad. That's the exact admonishment I received.
Well, you and Steven Tyler have something in common. He lost the ball of his foot by not keeping it off the pavement while riding a motorcycle. But I'm sure his injury had more to do with alcohol and pharmaceuticals than yours did.
I drank water from the garden hose and didn’t get sick, ... and actually rode in back of a pick-up truck with a group of friends a couple of times. No one fell out of the truck.
“Must not be from the Cleveland area! Every newscast gave the E.Coli count, and told which beaches were safe!”
They did that 70 years ago?????
Good posting and good memories from my boyhood in the ‘40s-’50s!
Must have come from a Navy Corpsman. My Dad got the same thing.
You weren't one of those kids that hit your head on the bottom and wound up a little hinky... like starting to say something and suddenly wandering off without finishing the story, or something, were you?
Shooting off firecrackers at the police station just to get them to chase you.

“We had 40 kids in our class and we all learned to read and write, do math and spell almost all the words needed to write a grammatically correct letter.”
...but apparently not a grammatically correct post about how they survived before computers. There are plenty of places where they don’t even get the punctuation right.
Time for the paddle again!
