Dr. Danielle N. Lee, who writes for the Scientific American blog network and calls herself "the Urban Scientist," believes that the push to visit Mars and eventually inhabit it is "white colonialism."
Dr. Lee expressed her concerns in both the Scientific American blog and on Twitter. Writing in Scientific American in an article titled, "When discussing Humanitys next move to space, the language we use matters," Dr. Lee discusses Elon Musk's push to inhabit Mars some day.
She is very critical of Musk, saying that his language is not inclusive enough to either women and minorities. "Diversity, Inclusion, Access and Ethics should be a critical part of these conversations about space science, discovery, exploration, and yes eventual travel and emigration," she writes. "And when we look around and see a homogenous [sic] group of individuals discussing these issues issues that command insane budgets, we should pause."
On Twitter, she was much more forward, writing:
Keep in mind, Musk never said that space colonization was for only whites. In fact, he never mentioned race once. The only reference to people by Musk in Dr. Lee's article was when Musk said that "humans" must get excited to explore space.
No matter, Dr. Lee has more to say about his ideas:

The irony is Elon Musk is a true African American. I bet she isn’t.
Be nice.
Send her at night so it’ll be cooler.
What is science anymore to Scientific American?
Two problems: 1) You are discriminating against victim groups that are exercising their 1st Amendment right. 2) This would pollute the ocean with extra substinence (food) causing CO2 emissions to rise to uncontrollable levels ending in Runaway Man Caused Global Climate Change.
It’s a “power word” to them.
I guess we are overlooking Africa’s contribution to the sciences and space travel, just like the Muzzies. STFU hose bag.
It would be best to make the word powerless.
No need to punish those who use it,
just don’t let it do what they want it to do -
give them special privilege,
silence dissent,
silence criticism.
in the last couple of years, I find myself thinking of the movies Apollo 13, and when watching the scenes of mission control, all white, all men, and thinking of the honor, integrity, and great things that were accomplished with those type of men, I just want to friggen cry as to what happened to our country.
Does anyone have a picture of Captain Picard saying not this $hit again, but regardless of who I am this woman has the right to say what she wants, but as a very conservative catholic friend taught me years ago, “sometimes you need to learn when to speak and learn when to shut up”, knowing that will make you a smarter person in life.
Basically, anything that Blacks don’t like, don’t understand, or can’t compete effectively in, is racist.
Similarly, anything that women don’t like, don’t understand, or can’t compete effectively in, is sexist.
Further, anything that [insert aggrieved group here] don’t like, don’t understand, or can’t compete effectively in, is [insert -ist here].
The problem is that too many White males have bought into this nonsense.
Good point, maybe we should ALL give up our boarding positions to POCs, and let the mass exodus begin.
I strongly doubt this "urban scientist" has seen "To Serve Man" from the Twilight Zone... (heh)
lol. My father taught me, "Let people think you are ignorant. Don't open your mought and prove it."
She got a Ph.D. researching the behavior of rats.
I watched the movie growing up a lot and it didn’t really matter to me who they were, the only thing is that they had “the right stuff” to go into space or be in mission control to get the job done, and in the end that’s all that mattered. I will never work for NASA, however I work in the IT field and am into Sci-Fi things, so it inspired me a bit in a way.
So...umm...does she think the Red Planet should be reserved for exploration by the Red Man?
A writer for Scientific American? I can now fully disqualify that rag as a joke; a flat Earth society with no qualifications in science, and yet calling themselves “scientific”.
