Doing research for a novel. Can anybody tell me, what section of London would the families of merchantmen sailors have lived in during the late 17th century? All I can find on-line is "London." But I've got to believe that they lived relatively close to the docks in areas with specific names. And I suppose officers would live in a different section than that of common sailors.

LOTS of great information. Can’t thank you all enough. I knew my fellow FReepers would come through.

Off topic, but still interesting for background.

Lloyd’s of London may have a great deal of information on this subject as they were the center of shipping in that period.
Hudson Bay Company may have extensive records of their sailors.
A Professor of English Literature may be able to rattle them off the top of their head as the sea faring literature was very popular in that time.
Diaries of sailors are a distinct possibilty.

Hey, Lee...
Finally got to my library and looked up this book I have that may help you with not just your specific question but also London history in general.
It’s entitled: “ London: The Biography” and goes into real detail as to the origins, history and development, and areas of London. Chapter 57 deals with the history of water front activity on the Thames in London. I just skimmed it bit and it looks as if it may be of great help to your project.
I’m sure you could find a copy on Amazon...
Let us know how you do, okay?
Sorry, the author of “London: The Biography” is Peter Ackroyd...
Cheers...
