An African-American scholar says that emphasis on STEM education is bad for blacks. Earlier today on Sirius XM Urban View, an African-American talk station, the guest was Daryl Scott, president of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.
The conversation turned to STEM — science, technology, engineering, and math — education, and the origins of the ongoing push to encourage institutions and students to focus on those subjects. Can you guess what happened?
In 1983, the guest explained, a commission empaneled by the secretary of education issued a report titled “A Nation at Risk: The Imperative for Education Reform.” In a memorable phrase, it warned of “a rising tide of mediocrity” in the nation’s public schools. That phrase, he said, was a “euphemism.” A euphemism for what? “For us — for African Americans.” There is nothing that happens in these United States that will not be impugned as secret racism. I can see problems with calculus, though I had none. It does require memorizing relationships and procedures. You have to work your way through, you cannot see the whole path in many complicated problems, at least I could not.
Funny, trigonometry is probably the most used math for me these days beyond arithmetic and bursts of algebra.
It’s the white people who are not going to put up with planes dropping out of the sky, and bridges collapsing under vehicles and buildings toppling over onto other ones ... :-) ...
Just have one or two of those things happen and see what the white voters say ... LOL ...
I read Triggernometry by Eugene Cunningham years ago.. it explained how some people were faster on the draw than others.

The best training I had in Trig and Geometry was when I went to work in a steel fabrication layout shop. Real world use of both!

The two main minority groups in the USA have no want or need for education or to better themselves. As a society, they have been instilled in hatred of the USA and have been taught that we did not create our wealth by brains and ingenuity but by force of taking it from them.
They live mostly like animals, are too stupid to learn, and want nothing more than to create destruction and mayhem to turn this country into their animalistic state. They do not mind living and acting like animals and want everyone to be just like them.
IQs don’t add up, they average out.

I had in mind the failure of the grid, (which I do not hope for, by the way), and the need to go back to manual skills.
I love technology, and all it has brought us, but sometimes wonder how our clerks would manage to add up our groceries, and correctly count out our change.
How would architects and engineers function?
Assume no recorders, maybe I should add shorthand to the list?
My list could go on and on, and is obviously impractical. But while we marvel at all our modern technology, we have lost many skills, and those of us old enough to remember them are going to pass on, taking them with us.
Maybe we could encourage our young to have re-enactment “faires”, as some do for medieval times, but with the 50s as the model.

I see your point, but the white voters will do what they did last November, and elect a bunch of gutless, spineless wussies called Republicans. These gutless, spineless wussies, would much rather have planes dropping, buildings toppling, and nucs going off, than be called racists. I know this is all speculation, but I think it is predictable. The pubbies will say, blow up the whole country if you want to, , just don't call me a racist.

STEM sounds good but that can’t be the whole story; a scientist has to be able to write well enough not to embarrass the institution he took his doctorate at...
