When Rudy Giuliani accused President Obama of not loving America, was he expressing a form of racism? If not, what was Giuliani saying?
I have argued, controversially to some on the left, that it is important to grapple with ideas on their own terms before merely analyzing their motivations. American conservatism is historically intertwined with white racism in such a way that nearly any conservative idea could plausibly be understood as an appeal to racism, but most of those ideas can be expressed and justified in non-racial terms, and deserve to be taken at face value. The trouble with Giulianis comments is that they lack the coherence necessary to be analyzed as an idea. Brush away the bilious rage he has emitted, and nothing solid remains behind.
The original basis for Giulianis comments was Obamas allegedly unusual upbringing. He wasnt brought up the way you were brought up and I was brought up, through love of this country, alleged the former mayor. As Wayne Barrett points out, Giulianis father was a mob enforcer, and he and his five brothers all avoided military service during World War II. What about this upbringing in any way suggests it conveyed some deeper patriotism than Obamas?
Giuliani subsequently clarified his original remarks, though not in the way he intended, by asserting that Obamas alleged anti-Americanism amounted to socialism or possibly anti-colonialism. Here Giuliani is reprising the theories of Dinesh DSouza, who has described Obama as fundamentally influenced by Kenyan anti-colonialism. Unfortunately for Giuliani, DSouzas racism is so transparent not even many conservatives care to defend it any longer....

“”(George Bush did it in Los Angeles.)””
I’m sure there is a file somewhere that they all go back to for GWB material so they can say/write, “George Bush” did it, said it, thought it!!! No matter the subject they (leftists) all think they’re being so cagey by mentioning (as if innocently) that obozo is doing nothing more/less than George Bush did at such and such a time. In this case, he had to go back to 1992 - WOW! So transparent and so stupid..
I wish some day soon they would understand that not all of us are as dumb as they or the voters who put that cretin in the WH! I know - Wish in one hand blah blah blah!!!
It’s The default position of critics of Obie-Won by leftists. I mean, what other legitimate reason could there be?
Read my post. Rudy’s father worked and he and his brothers did not join the Nazis as has our fearless leader joined with the enemy. The author questions patriotism as “They didn’t do anything.” Rudy questions by saying “Obama has done everything.” Clear?
Clear?
Nope.
To: New York Magazine. Rudy Giuliani told the TRUTH about the Liberals’ failed Messiah. Deal with it, jerk weeds.
Given that Rudy has gotten death threats, and likely from just the kind of blind-worship liberals like Chait here, it’s obvious that his column was written in order to provide a defense for any assassin who decides to take up the task, and, therefore, to encourage the act of assassination itself. And these are the tolerant souls who deplore violence.
Great post from the article’s comments:
“1. You didn’t directly address my question about Giuliani’s implication that liberals don’t love America. Indeed, by declining to say that you love America, you lend some small credibility to that charge.
2. Nations are not sets of principles. No Frenchman worries about whether anyone else is being anti-French. A nation is group of people with a reasonably common linguistic/cultural life and sense of themselves as a nation. No ideological litmus test is required.
3. Patriotism can be mis-used and it can be properly used. Nations are like any other social institution; they’re partly good and partly bad; and they require some commitment from their members. That commitment can be emotional or purely practical; but practical doesn’t work very well in the long run.
It seems many liberals — myself excluded, obviously — get quite hung up about loving their country. Conservatives, who get almost everything wrong, have no trouble understanding the question or answering it. But the right doesn’t own patriotism. Please don’t cede it to them.”
What was it? Like others here said, it is the truth. These lost soul Americans, like this author, just can't handle the truth. The 100 years of the progressive statist movement has stolen many Americans souls when it comes to the value of freedom and the Constitution that protects them and our freedoms. The rise of statism, power, and control, they believe in so much, goes against those freedoms. I wish the author would read the replies here and he would get his answer.

Giuliani made statements of fact.
A partial truth, maybe. Yes, O certainly doesn't love America, but he also hates America, at least the white part.
Oh, I don't know, maybe simply an honest and obvious statement of truth?
Ithaca is experiencing yet another historic day of below zero wind chills. On the bright side this is keeping the muggings down
Jonathan Chait is another clown tumbling out of the drive by media’s car and tripping over his oversized, two left, bozo shoes.
You're a nut, lady.
Shouldn't you be out shutting down a school somewhere?
I will not be responding to the content of any of your posts. Of course, if you continue to post to me some may conclude that you are stalking.
That's nice.
One more thing:
You post an article supportive of the leftist/communist/Marxist worldview and then disappear. No comment from you after 60 posts.
I think you're on to something here.
You forgot to mention he's a n00bie too. I mean, you've got almost 16 months on him.
Good for you - catching these suspicious troll posters early. Nail his butt before he posts another 27,000 threads.
Here - I'll ping the Kitty Keepers for you.
