Please help if you know what this might be

I am asking Freepers for help in diagnosing the mysterious illness that doctors have failed to diagnose thus far. Our 3-year-old grandson has been sick for several days with high fever, a rash that started on his face but has now spread to his entire body, loss of appetite, and now peeling skin around his eyes, nose and mouth. His fever is minimal during the day, but starts to increase in the afternoon and gets close to 103.

He has been to the doctor several times, had a strep test that came back negative, and was taken to the local children's hospital for dehydration ($400 and all they did was give him juice and crackers). They did a blood test which was normal for white blood cell count, but said he is slightly anemic.

First they thougth he had a recurrence of fifth disease, and the hospital doctors thought he might have mono.

He is finally eating a little and will drink a little juice, but he whines and cries constantly and acts like his feet hurt. His rash is very itchy most of the time, so he scratches at it, particularly around his waist.

If you have any ideas or know of any children who have something similar, please post a reply.

He has another doctor's appointment this afternoon, so we will see if they have any better answers than they have so far.

And pray for him, if you will.

Get him on antibiotics now. Within 9 days of outset or you could be looking at very very serious conditions. find someone to treat him for scarlet fever.

Some of the things that cause itchy rash, fever and loss of appetite are Chickenpox, Scarlet Fever, Roseola, Lyme disease, Mononucleosis, hard to believe they haven’t diagnosed it though.

I hope you get an answer today and it’s treatable. Poor kid.

Has he been checked for a staph infection?

We have a 4 yo and 2 yo...they have had all sorts of stuff. Our daycare was shutdown by foot and mouth? disease? and also we just got over a 4 day fever virus that ended in slight rashes that went away. Roseola (sp) was mentioned. Hope this helps! Prayers sent.....but don’t worry, kids are pretty darn tough!

Praying for him and praying for you too. :) You’re obviously worried and I know how scary it is to have an ill child, especially not knowing what he has or how serious it could be.

I, too, think it could be Kawasaki Syndrome. In any case, I'd drive him to the best hospital within 200 miles — “best” meaning affiliated with a university and highly ranked — and go to the emergency room and wait however long you have to until he's admitted. Then, refuse to check him out until until he is well.

buy Sonne’s #7 clay and have him drink 1/2 T twice a day. It removes toxins and viruses.

One of my sons had shingles believe it or not, at about 8 years old. Check this out.

Not saying it is, but the waist thing made me comment!

Being in Texas I would suggest cross referencing the symptoms with Mexico and Central America. Probably an obscure disease in the US but rampant and imported from the South.

Good luck.

I can’t believe no one has suggested this.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enterovirus_68

It is reaching epedemic stages but not getting the press it should do to Ebola.

God bless your grandson. I hope a cure is found ASAP

It’s been a long time, but it seems similar to my son’s scarlet fever when he was two. Scarlet fever is untreated strep, but sometimes initial strep tests come back negative. Get him checked again.

We thought this might be it, but his strep test was negative and his blood count was normal. They said whatever it is, it isn’t bacterial. I hope they do another blood test today.

Thank you and thanks to all the Freepers who have replied. What a great group of caring people!

Shingles is one of the few things we hadn’t yet considered. I’ll look into it. Doctors probably don’t think of this when it’s a little kid.

Please ask them to check for Stevens Johnson Syndrome.

(I hope its not that) & hope he gets better soon.

Has he been taking any prescription (or OTC) medications prior to this? Certain ones have a rare side-effect called Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, though other things can cause it:
