ESPNs Colin Cowherd went off on a rant today about Americans who do and do not, in his view, deserve his sympathies.
Those who do not include those who choose to smoke, eat fast food or drink 13 cokes every day. Thats on you, Cowherd said, delivering a sentiment that many Americans would probably agree with.
My sympathy goes to the military members in this country, Cowherd said toward the end of Tuesdays show. Socio-economically, no choices, paid almost nothing, lose a limb, lose a life. That, I feel sympathy for.
Military members past and present probably arent looking to Colin Cowherd in a feeling of gratitude for that. Americans who enlist or enter the officer corps do so for many reasons family history of service, a desire to give back to their country, a desire to gain experience and education, and of course the need to do something positive to escape tough circumstances all factor in.
Cowherd wasnt finished. He also said that police and firemen dont join out of a sense of duty.
What fireman becomes a fireman knowing that at some point he will at some point run into a house thats burning? Cowherd asked rhetorically. Its dangerous!
The obvious answer is All of them. Including the thousands of volunteer fireman around the country.
Cowherd returned to explaining his understanding of why Americans join the military.
We know most people that go into the military in this country they need the military often to pay bills. That is is almost a federal safety net financially, and by the way youll take shots. Youll be sent two or three times to a raging inferno in the Middle East. That stuff scares me. That stuff Im worried about. Theres loss of life there.

ESPN has lost its way. It used to be a sports channel.
I hope FoxSports eats their lunch.
Yeah, me too.
ESPN is of the position that the Obama administration has removed economic opportunity from a generation.
Those that don’t understand DUTY,SERVICE and HONOR never will, Colin Coward, sorry Cowturd, oops, Cowherd, never will.
This guy is looking at it in 1960s viewpoint, I think (which doesn't surprise me).
Cowherd I think has a great desire to be the next Olbermann and land his own MSNBC show. He has a great disdain for anything conservative, for flyover country, for anything he perceives as low class. Truly one of the most liberal people in the medial
I wonder if someone helped Colin change his panties after he obviously messed them after such an emotional rant...
It’s obvious Cowherd doesn’t know anyone who is/ or has been in the military....which is his loss...
Thank you for your service.
It would be interesting to know how many people Mr. Cowherd actually knows in the service. Most of those I know had plenty of skills and opportunities - they made a choice, mostly based on patriotism. My son-in-law comes from a military family and has an education and skills totally transferrable to civilian work. A close friend who was killed in Afghanistan was a linguist, highly intelligent young man who volunteered and joined the Marines after a high school friend had been killed in the service. I have heard this same refrain many times, mainly from Democrats and liberals, who have no concept of the number of very intelligent young people who have volunteered and sacrificed civilian careers to serve our country. Makes me sick.
I walked into the recruiting station on Hollywood Blvd. in 1956, during lunch time.
The only recruiter was a MSGT of the US Air Force so I signed up for 4 years in the USAF. All the other recruiters had gone to lunch.
Had the US Marines recruiter been the only one in the office I would have become a leatherneck.
I was just a dumb kid who wanted to serve his country.
Thank you for serving.
Sooooo....ESPN doesn’t do sports any more?
My son is in Trig and Physics this year and a plethora of advanced electives as a junior in high school. He is joining delayed entry next year; not because he has no options but because he wants to serve. He will be the fifth generation of my family to serve. As he stands today (far more disciplined and advanced in maturity than any of his peers) he will be an awesome force to deal with once he exits the Marines let alone what he does inside the Corps.
Godspeed to all the men and women of this country that wear the uniform currently and are working hard to wear it in their near futures.
I heard this bit today - it is taken a little out of context in this article.
Colin Cowturd is weapons-grade stupid.
I totally disagree - Cowherd is a mixed bag. He believes a lot of conservative things, just doesn't recognize them as conservative. And yes, he is liberal in a lot of ways, but probably much less than the average ESPN employee.
This article is horrible in that it takes this way out of context. Colin was saying that claims of NFL players or college scholarship athletes are being "exploited" was ridiculous - and he clumsily used this analogy of the military. It was a bit patronizing, but I can tell no one else on this thread heard it.
