Famed Chef Emeril Lagasse Says Obama May Drive Him Broke

Famed chef Emeril Lagasse says that it’s becoming all but impossible to be a successful restaurateur in America today. The government just gets in the way too much. Lagasse specifically singled out the current president’s policies.

“It’s becoming a very challenging industry to become a very successful average restaurateur,” continued Lagasse. “I can’t charge $300 a person in my restaurant or I would not be in business. Am I using any different ingredients? Not really. Am I using any caliber of service staff? I don’t think so. I think our service is as good or better than most places.”

“And then you add all the Obama nonsense to what it’s become in the last several years. I don’t have anything against Mr. Obama. I’m just saying the way that, you know… the government should stay out of things. [...] Pretty soon, they’re going to wipe a lot of the middle restaurateurs and restaurant cooks. [...] If it continues, then watch: you’re going to have high-end, and you’re going to have fast food, and you’re going to have chain restaurants.”

Lagasse shared his thoughts on TNT’s On the Menu. He predicts that if the government doesn’t start getting out of the way, the American restaurant industry will split and leave entrepreneurs and start-ups behind. American restaurants will consist only of high-end establishments like the ones Lagasse owns, fast food and chain restaurants, because no one else will be able to succeed.

If he still "has nothing against Obama", he hasn't learned a doggone thing.

Sadly, a lot of Americans prefer the chain restaurants. We had two family-run restaurants go out of business recently in my small town. One became a chain franchisee and the other just shut its doors. They both served decent food. I don't get it.

He has “nothing against Obama” because he doesn’t want to get audited and knows that most of his wealthy liberal clientele have “nothing against Obama,” even though they’re probably secretly scared out of their wits that he’s going to seize their assets and they’re hoping to placate him with demonstrations of undying affection.

Every business owner or manager in America ought to read The Vampire Economy: Doing Business Under Fascism

Written by a German businessman in PRE-war Germany, it details what it was like as the fascist state apparatus encroached into every business and slowly makes each businessman an agent of the state, a slave of the Party. If you're trying to operate a business, you need to see how this works. Much will already be familiar to you.

I think of Antoine’s in New Orleans, the oldest family owned restaurant in the US. It has been a while, but their creole and other dishes are superb. Nothing like the prices you cite.
Ate at Emeril’s in N.O. years ago and it was reasonable and
prices were also. Vegas.. another story. Have had some awfully expensive meals there that were also just “rather good”.

The small business aspect of the industry is being hammered as elsewhere. And Emeril is helping people notice.
