Is Chivalry Too Risky?

Earlier this month, a 39-year-old Texan visiting Philadelphia was out in the wee hours of the morning when he saw several men inside a car pull up next to a group of women, whom they began taunting and catcalling. A police captain later reported that the visitor “took offense to something that the guys were saying to the girls and said ‘Hey, watch what you’re saying.’”

At that point, one of the men inside the vehicle got out and punched the Good Samaritan, who fell and struck his head on the concrete, knocking him unconscious. The suspects then fled and the victim ended up in the hospital.

Even more tragic is the instance one night last July when a 49-year-old man came to the rescue of a woman being sexually assaulted by two men at a Fresno gas station. This allowed the woman to escape, but he was badly beaten by the pair and left in the street, where he was struck and killed by a passing vehicle.

And what if the woman doesn’t even appreciate a man coming to her defense? These days many young women resent even having doors opened for them.

My son saw that one of his classmates were being physically harassed by a kid in his gym class. He tried to tell his teacher but this other student was the coach’s son and the bullying never stopped. I told him then he had 2 choices: keep his head down and not get involved or he could stand up for his classmate. He was warned though, there would be consequences either way but that he was free to make this choice himself. One week later I was called in to bring my son home from school early. He had been expelled because he knocked the coach’s son down and there was blood. I asked him later if he thought it was worth getting kicked out of school. He said it was because now that bully would never grow up to be a predator.

Wow! Why?

Too many dirty looks, scowls, and glares from them. They want to be treated like males? I’m happy to oblige them.

That’s true, but there are those of us who appreciate it when someone is polite enough to hold the door so we don’t drop everything.

I’m not one of those bitchy women who’ll give you a nasty look.

Courtesy isn’t about being rewarded by those you extend it to, but about you doing the right thing. Besides, annoying a feminazi seems like fun to me. Smile big when the scowl appears and enjoy your coal-heaping!

Only once did I find myself in a position to defend a woman being physically attacked by a man. It was at the end of my usual three mile run down a beach at low tide. The man wasn't hitting her, but he was forcibly holding her on the hood of a car in a beach parking lot and screaming in her face. He was out of control.

I managed to bother him enough that he let her go and started chasing me, screaming "I'm going to kill you!" I had hoped I could get him to chase me, since I was almost certain I could outrun him. I just wanted to give the woman enough time to get away.

Sure enough, I left him far behind. Thirty minutes later I went back to the parking lot to see if I could locate something I had dropped in the excitement. A young guy recognized me, and told me what had happened after I left. The woman got in a car, and when the man reappeared in the parking lot, she almost ran him over as she drove off.

A good outcome, I thought. The woman was intact, I was intact, and even the maniac was intact. I had fulfilled the obligations of chivalry without getting anyone hurt.

I'm not at all sure that given the opportunity (and the ability) I would do it again. Chivalry makes serious demands on men, but these days it is too obvious that there are no comparable demands made on women. The modern version of chivalry seems to be this: Men are supposed to defend women with their lives because that's better for women, and that's all that counts.

Today I listened to two young women at a nearby restaurant table engage in loud male bashing. Male bashing is now commonplace -- it's normal American female behavior. Why on earth would I risk my life to defend women who think I'm their inferior?

As for door-holding, I will hold the door for anyone. Over the years only a couple of feminists have been vocal about being offended. I'm glad I offended them.

I wouldn’t whine if some guy rescued me from being raped/having my face pound in. Why is helping out a fellow human being considered negative? People are so dumb. But then again, Femi-Nazis would prefer being a victim of violence if it means they can still demonize men. Men who don’t rape/harm others fly in the face of their bigoted thinking.

Just out of curiosity, did any of those women offer to defend or in any way help their would be benefactors? It's kind of difficult to successfully defend anyone if they just leave you high and dry in the process.

Any anyone who wants to lecture me about how women are "weak and defenseless" and can't help should read this first.

I learned that lesson too. I was in Dc for about a month and I gave up my seat for a woman who made a snide remark, remained standing and some shifty kid with droopy pants slid into it. After a few more similar incidents and even having someone grab the door from my hands as I was holding it open, I just gave up. Now I just let the door hit them in the face and try to take up two seats on the train. Theo only exception I make is for mothers with little ones. Everyone else gets the gate.

“I just gave up.”

Don’t give up. I always defer to women in public. When they complain I explain that I’m not doing it for them, I’m doing it for me. That usually shuts ‘em up and often gets them to accept the token act in their favor - probably just to spite me for doing something for myself!

"If you are able to open the door yourself, you can do so yourself; holding the door for the able-bodied encourages the entitlement mentality."

All these years, I've been an enabler...

I hold the door for men or women - it's basic courtesy. I'll flip your absurd statement and and say those that don't extend common courtesy to others hasten the slide of our society into the abyss.

Sad that you reject a fundamental cornerstone of Western Civilization.

It is sad that the womyn you refer to do also. They may think they are bulletproof at 25, but when they turn 50 who will have their back?

I’ve had some that would just stand there until I let the door go and it closed. And no more being Mr. Polite Guy in grocery stores. If me and a womyns are approaching an aisle at the the same time, I don’t stop anymore to let them go first. I make sure I go down it first. And if they are chatting and blocking an aisle with their cart despite seeing me coming? I no longer politely ask them to let me through. I just ram their cart with mine and push it aside. Now THAT gets some glares. lol

Momma and Daddy raised this young man right. I hold doors open for women and offer to help carry what ever they have in their hand. Their response has no bearing on the situation. The right thing to do is always the right thing to do no matter the circumstance.

I dated a young lady that used to try and hold the door open for me. We went on two dates. I still hold the door open for Mrs. Verga and we have been together for 32 years. God will I will still be able to hold the door open for her and other ladies till my dying day.
