The lunches students bring from home are often filled with unhealthy packaged foods and sugary drinks and little that would win any nutrition awards, according to a new study by university researchers. Missing from those lunches, they said, were fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy, whole grains and, nearly 25 percent of the time, anything that resembled an entree.

I agree, it is none of the school’’s business what any child packs for lunch.
My daughter brings her lunch from home because the food at school “sucks” - her word, not mine. She is 16 and quite capable of determining what she wants for lunch (she’s been doing so for a few years.)
There is always more fruit and veggies in her lunch bag than she can get at school because she is unable to buy them separately from the full lunch. We also make all kinds of snack stuff together.
School hasn’t started back up here yet, but by June she said that most of her friends and at least half the kids, during her lunch period, were bringing their own lunch. Considering nearly 80% of the kids are eligible for free or reduced lunch, that is an amazing number.
My mom gave us the same lunch. She had eight of us kids and got good at lunch packing. See post #38
Lucky you - I was stuck with a bologna sandwich (tuna on Friday) and a glass of milk - and I went home for lunch every day until high school.
Jax prefers ham and cheese or tuna salad, but also will do ham or chicken salad, sandwiches. There is always fruit, orange, apple, grapes, whatever we've got and she loves having hummus and celery. We also make baked tortilla chips and vary the seasonings. She really does love the one-upping of the packed lunches of the other kids!!!!
My Mom packed my lunch every day. Great sammiches! But she also packed an Apple every day. I got so sick of them that, to this day, I can’t stand them!
My grandkids take their lunches to school. As far as I know they are not being harassed about it here in Texas yet.
What a stupid report. The ‘milk’ (1% all they got! is bought at school.
Unfortunately, my boys did not go to schools that allowed home prepared lunches. However, before they started school I would leave a plate in the refrigerator with carrot and celery sticks, hard cooked egg pieces, cheese chunks, grape tomatoes, grapes, apple slices, bits of cooked meat or chicken.-, etc. They could open the refrigerator and grab a few pieces any time they wished. They were allowed candy four times a year—Christmas, Easter, their birthday, and Halloween. My younger son had his first and only cavity in his twenties behind an impacted wisdom tooth. My older son had his first and only cavity around age 40. I did not nag them to brush their teeth, but did teach them to rinse their mouth with water after eating anything. The adult teeth are mostly formed in the preschool years which are critical for the future strength of the teeth and health in general.
It’s getting worse.
Let kids eat what they want for lunch. They need noon calories to help keep them alert through the afternoon classes. Give them a good breakfast and a good dinner and they should grow up just fine.
Whole milk is 3% fat; lowfat is 1% fat. Fats help people feel full and people who feel full eat less carbohydrates. But are dairy products a daily need?
Whole grain products have as much or more sugar than refined products. It’s not as healthy as advertised.

Leslie, shut the hell up and mind your own damned business.
Thank you.
That might be true if they were actually your kids, but they are not, they belong to the state, you only get to take care of them until they need them.
Remember how easily they decide if we didn't wear seat belts and helmets that we became a burden on society for the care expense that accrues when we had an accident? Same goes for eating unhealthy food, you become a financial burden to the government mandated health care system.
Just sayin
That would be a parents right to feed their kids, not the freaken gub mint.
Hey gub mint pukes, Up yours./
Lunch doesn’t have to be a healthy balanced entree. A sandwich, pear or another fruit and a snack or two is sufficient for most kids. They don’t have to have a multi-grain something, fruit, dairy and protein at every meal - just some of each at some point in the day.
Since a lunch has to sit in a backpack for a few hours, shelf-stable and non-refrigerated gets preference. That means less milk, meat and perishables.
In high school, I survived on a hamburger, fries, chocolate malt and a piece of sugar cream pie at lunch ...for four years. I’m 72. (Just wish I could find another piece of sugar cream pie!)
FO&D, Still Thinking says. Please. Soon.
The school lunch program is another example of corporate cronyism.
