I saw the movie today and thought it was excellent. There were a few historical details where one might quibble but generally it had a lot of great material. The recreations of the Revolutionary War, Alexis de Tocqueville, Abraham Lincoln, and Madam C. J. Walker were great.

A large proportion of the Union men who died in the War probably thought they were dying for the Union, not to free the slaves.

I remember watching Saul Alinsky debate William Buckley on the old Firing Line show he had on PBS. Here is a sample.

Well, Buckley was brilliant! Thanks for posting this link, South40.

Curious -- you said people were shouting at the screen when you went to see the film. I'm wondering who was in your audience. Granted, I did not go on the opening day, and I went during a weekday later on, but both the handful of people leaving the prior screening and the handful of people at the screening I attended were old white people. That saddened me. I do hope all those grannies and grandpops give the DVD to their grandchildren.

I live in a pretty conservative area in East San Diego County. The theater was about 1/2 full and for a matinee that was surprising. The audience was made up of young, old, male and female. Mrs. 40 and I (both retired) didn’t yell but laughed out loud each time it happened. The audience members seemed pretty informed and clearly were not pro Obama. When he said If you like your plan you can keep your plan, they yelled LIAR! When he said We are not collecting data on individuals, the crowd yelled LIAR! It was hilarious. I can’t stand to hear the man speak so I didn’t mind. The film got a big ovation at the end also. :-)

When I saw 2016 on the first day on the central coast of California, something happened that I’d never experienced before or after:

The house lights had not come up as the last credits played out and mostly it was still very quiet and people began shouting warnings,:

“You better VOTE people, or THIS is what is going to happen, I SWEAR TO GOD…!! You read your Bible, and you go read the Constituion, before they TAKE IT AWAY…!!”

And total strangers traded these warnings in the dark, back and forth, shouted at bellowing, full-volume for over 30 seconds, it was a little scary and intimidating, but in truth it was what I, too, was feeling.

The local populace is very liberal however we host 3 military bases also and so there are a lot of conservatives also, and very successful business people who get taxed like crazy.

It was the first time I’d ever experienced such an impassioned, moving reaction in any movie, ever —it was maybe something you’d expect in the Marines or in a Baptist revival.

I saw it yesterday, with my visiting brother, and, it was very good. I was struck by how eloquent Ted Cruz is compared
to our current Wimp-in Chief, and the Patriotism throughout the movie. Required viewing for youngsters, and wishy-washy
Obamabots.

Spent 8 months in Spain teaching English to junior high level students on a stipend. Lots of holidays in Spain so she had chance to tour almost every country in Europe. Starts Law college in September.

“My only potential point of disagreement with it is its take on the Civil War. When I was in school, one of my teachers said that the Civil War had nothing to do with slavery: that it was about if the South had the right to split away from the Union.”

It was both. Slavery was the reason that the deep South seceded but the war itself started over the issue of secession. Lincoln called up the army to force the seceding States to return to the Union. Ironically King George had the same view of secession 80 years earlier.

There are several shots of Alinsky speaking. I had never seen this dude before.

Here's WFB tangling with him on Dec 11, 1967: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZ9Si5pkAqg

It was surprising to see “America” address the NSA’s electronic surveillance state and Aaron Swartz’s death toward the end of the film. Sure, it’s easy to see liberalism in front of you when Bathhouse Barry gets to work with his magic pen, but there’s a war for digital rights being fought that less technically inclined conservatives don’t know about.

That must have been awesome! I guess there were too few people when I went to get that going -- about 8 or 10, in a well-off suburb in a purple county of blue, blue Maryland. But I did hear a few audience members raving about it to the people waiting to get into the next showing.

Loved the Dinesh Diner scene where he took orders in a thick accent. So funny!

Well...she sounds like a bright woman. And enjoying her early years....Good for her.

Someday I will go to Spain....

What type of law is she gravitating too?

It's always gratifying when our children are doing well....I have two girls...and they are a joy to be around. And they are successful.

FRegards,
