U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who was promoted while held prisoner by the Taliban, said he wants to be recognized by his old rank, according to a senior U.S. official.
"In his mind, he's a Pfc," the official told CNN Pentagon Correspondent Barbara Starr on Sunday.
Now in the beginning of the lengthy road to reintegration after his exchange for five Taliban commanders previously held at the Guantanamo Bay detention facility in Cuba, Bergdahl is letting those around him know he still feels like a Pfc, regardless of his in-absentia promotion. The U.S. official could not confirm to CNN whether Bergdahl has resumed wearing his uniform but added that doing so is part of the standard reintegration process.
The Pentagon issued a brief statement Sunday, declining to comment on Bergdahl's recovery process beyond saying the Defense Department continues to evaluate Bergdahl, provide him with medical and reintegration care and remains intent on conducting a comprehensive review of the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.
"Our focus remains on providing him with the care he needs," Rear Adm. John Kirby said in a statement.
The few details emerging around the soldier's recovery after his five years in captivity are a prelude to what's shaping up to be a week defined by confrontation over President Barack Obama and his administration's move to exchange Bergdahl for five Taliban hardliners previously determined too high a risk to release....

Since the Army doesn’t have any jets that I’m aware of, due to Key West, that’s correct. IIRC, making E-5 in 3-4 years is nearly impossible unless you’re a model airman.
This guy is going to need months of coaching by the Obama crew before he can be trusted to talk the party line to the media.
I managed. Twice, depending on how you count the gap in service...
It's a different world today.
I let my last enlistment expire in 2008 after I found out the USAF actually does insist on PT these days. To Army standards.
Didn't fit my coffee cup and swivel chair lifestyle.

Let us not forget that Bergdahl FIRST tried to join the French Foreign Legion. He joined the US Army after the Legion turned him down. This isn’t some patriot.
does anyone understand how he was promoted while missing? This sounds just as bad as civilian bureaucracy in US government
I am inclined to believe he is unstable. Who, but a total loony would walk away in Afghanistan searching for the Taliban? The Taliban that beheads people and posts it on the internet. I’m sure that there is some clinical term for people that live in fantasy land.
That being said...he is still responsible for his actions, no matter what the cause. And should have to pay for his actions. It’s sort of like I view the mass murderers and people who murder their children. I’m really, really sorry you are a mental case...but too bad.
Like others on this thread have said...I really think he is being reinvented by the press and reprogrammed by the military to cover The Won’s fanny.
See my post #25.
That same question was asked on one of the cable news channels (O'Reilly Factor?) the other night. It was explained that it was an automatic promotion based on time in service that is given to everyone.
The fastest you could possibly make E5 in the active USAF was 4’years. That isn’t even possible today. You didn’t mention WAPS testing, so I’m not sure I believe your clams without clarification.
Guess he was too stupid to realize that there are other foreign legions.

Thank you. I did not know this was the process. This story just gets more and more strange.
Ask anyone in the Naval service what a four-striper is.
Why would Bergdahl want to join the French Foreign Legion?
A. For their education benefits in the US.
B. They have a great ballet program.
C. He likes to eat snails.
D. To protect and defend the Constitution of The United States.
E. He’s a dumbass.
I wonder who his Publicist is?
I had a mix of active and reserve. Lots of folks here on FR were around when I re-enlisted after 9/11.
I was a cook (services specialist) the second enlistment.

Were you drunk the entire time you were in?
“You’ll get nothing and like it!”
