LM, "Yes sir, we are ready", "The fuel leaks by design"

That's crazy. I remember remember reading reason for it, but I've forgotten now.

Anyway, after getting a degree in mechanical engineering, I have a much greater appreciation for the engineering --much more than as a child--, but I still have no idea how 99% of it was done. Vortex baffles?

Oh we could build it. IF we could get EPA approval.

It’s amazing that we could get anything like this done back then (reach the moon, win two world wars, build the interstate highway system) without the homage damanded to the “gay” to make it all possible.

I saw the layout of the vehicle laying on its side in the early 70s when it was outside. Seeing the size of that whole vehicle is a mind-blowing experience.

Heat expansion during Mach 3+ flight sealed the tanks.
If the tanks were sealed on the ground, the heat expansion would have burst them or the airframe.
It didn’t run on JP4, it was JP7 if memory serves, also used to cool parts of the airframe during flight.

Each aircraft has a mission and I love both the A-10 and AC-130’s.

Hard core in the S88t.

The Saturn V was in fact just barely able to lift off the ground. I heard an interview with an Apollo astronaut who was afraid it was going to crash into the tower because it rose so slowly, with the engines gimballing wildly to maintain attitude. But once most of the fuel was gone, the Saturn V was like a race horse. Have you ever tried to hang on to a race horse when it’s running at full speed?

We called them Habu’s at Kadena. An indigenous poison snake there.

We have an A-12 Blackbird on display at Battleship Memorial Park here in Mobile...it's visible from I-10 if you're ever cruising this way.

"Citizens of the state of Alabama had formed the "USS Alabama Battleship Commission" to raise funds for the preservation of battleship USS Alabama as a memorial to the men and women who served in World War II. Alabama’s school children raised approximately $100,000 in nickels and dimes from lunch money and allowances to help the cause.[4]"

I saw that interview yesterday. I believe it was Michael Collins, command module pilot on Apollo 11.

Right. Beale in Northern California and Kaneda in Okinawa were the two Strategic Reconnaisence Wing hubs for the Blackbird. I believe one or two were lost on takeoff at Kaneda. Beale mothballed all of their operations on the late 80s or early 90s and reverted their planes to the CIA. What a great time that was for American superiority and pride - 1941 to 1988.

It was built by Harley Davidson. :-P

HAH, what are the odds? You see that sudden dip in the power spike in your graph? Inboard engine cutoff. They had to shut down an F1 engine to prevent the combined thrust from tearing the ship apart.

I saw the Apollo launches live on TV, by the way, when there was such a thing. Watching all those vapor plumes in the upper atmosphere had me on the edge of my seat.

When the first stage separated, it was only 60 miles downrange and 40 miles high, but that was most of the work.

Being in the USAF and working on the flight line a lot, installing communications my first encounter with the SR was in 1973. It went right by me on the runway I prob could have touched it! That was a great time as we wound up drinking with the pilots. and when that baby took off the next it was like nothing ever seen before! 5 secs and it was a speck in the sky!
