All of a sudden, the Ring of Fire is starting to tremble violently. Last month, we had a whole bunch of major earthquakes along the Ring of Fire, and this month volcanoes all over the Ring of Fire are erupting. Of course, there has always been seismic activity within this giant band that stretches around the Pacific Ocean. After all, approximately 75 percent of all volcanoes are located in the Ring of Fire and approximately 90 percent of all global earthquakes occur along the Ring of Fire. But what is alarming is that the level of activity appears to be rising. Chile is experiencing almost constant shaking by earthquakes, a volcano in Peru just awakened for the first time in 40 years, and major volcanic eruptions have just taken place in Ecuador, the Kamchatka peninsula and off the coast of Japan. The west coast of the United States also lies along the Ring of Fire, but so far it has gotten off easy. Yes, there has been a little bit of shaking in southern California in recent weeks, but it hasnt been too bad. But scientists assure us that will change. At some point, there will be a major seismic event along the west coast. It is only a matter of time.
Unfortunately, the mainstream media in the United States pays very little attention to seismic activity around the rest of the world unless it happens in a heavily populated area. But the truth is that we have been witnessing some very unusual things lately.
For example, a volcanic eruption off the coast of Japan has created a brand new Island called Niijima that is literally eating another small volcanic island next to it

That sure looks like Leslie Nielsen on that poster but he didn’t get his name on it?
You don’t say sorry. You challenge anyone to beat that.
“..You challenge anyone to beat that....”
Uh uh. No way... The last time I challenged someone to beat that, there was a Tsunami shortly afterwards.
It was that fat guy over in Sheboygen that did it.
And it burns...burns....burns.....
It’s not Leslie...it’s Dana Andrews.
Tambora was only 199 years ago. Slate has a good article on tamboura posted yesterday ; my cell service provider is having issues with google so I can’t provide link
There’s a course this lawyer should take. It’s called ‘geology’.
Hello global cooling.

In fairness, Doug, we ARE in the midst of an “earthquake swarm.” 6 of the largest 13 earthquakes of the past century happened in the last 10 years.
The last earthquake swarm (1950-1965) generate 5 of the 13 largest earthquakes.
By contrast, none of the 25 largest earthquakes of the past century occurred between 1965 and 2005.
Oh i am not saying there were not big eruptions recently but the historical record suggests volcanic activity so rampant and large if it would to occur today we would not know what hit us.
The desert tortoise would ahve a much bigger problem than grazing cattle. Might keep the BLM occupied and they could leave American taxpayers alone.
Daughter is in the mission field at the base of a Central American volcano. I expect if it blows I wont see her again in this life.
I really REALLY like that movie.
When I was a kid, we went to see it at the Drive-in.
One day I’ll get a DVD of it.
Matched against the Holocene’s seismicity overall, I’d expect it to average out, despite a peak or valley here or there.
Though what to do outside improved building codes?
If it weren’t for tectonics we wouldn’t be here to discuss anything at all.
