Not surprised at all. If leftists understood how business people could be absolutely tortured by taxes and how invasive they were, to the place were even the smallest, newest businesses have to hire expensive professionals to protect them they wouldn’t be such avid government controllers. How many times have I heard people like Colmes say, “Oh, just go to court? Oh, just hire an accountant?”

I had a young friend start a small, new business. He was one day late filing a form (he was unaware of)where he had to check a box confirming he was still at a certain address. The fine was $500, his entire month’s profit.

When I tell small business tax or zoning stories to ardent libs, they simply refuse to believe them. They will challenge you outright, like the clueless at DU. Leftists are unaware of the barrage of paper business owners get, and how difficult it is to comply with it.

There are a surprising number of posts in the Huffpo comments that understand paying taxes.

This is incorrect. Businesses (and individuals) must pay estimated taxes at least quarterly. If you haven't paid most of your 2014 taxes already before the April 2015 filing deadline you owe additional penalties. Since it is nearing the end of March, Drudge likely is referring to paying his first quarter's estimated tax. Since Drudge apparently knows he won't be purchasing the required health insurance at all during the year he knows what his penalty will be and can add 1/4th of it to his first estimated tax payment to avoid additional penalties.

When I first saw his headline, I thought it was odd since we don’t pay that tax until next year, and then I realized that as a self-employed worker, he pays quarterly taxes.

I am surprised that Drudge has never purchased health insurance though. I totally oppose the government requiring health insurance, but also think that most people should at least have a catastrophic policy, because you never know when you might have a heart attack or a brain aneurism, and even if you are relatively wealthy, it might be hard to scrape together the money in short order to pay for treatment.
