Congresswoman Argues for End to “Welfare” as We Know It
Semi-News/Semi-Satire ^ | 10 Jan 2014 | John Semmens

Posted on 01/10/2014 4:00:17 PM PST by John Semmens

Representative Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) urged that we stop using the term “welfare” to describe the handouts government gives to support a distressingly large portion of the population.

“Welfare conjures up an image of some lazy person sitting around watching TV while taxpayers have to foot her bills,” Jackson said. “We need to change this image.”

The change Jackson is pushing is to rename the program. “If we were to call it the transitional living fund we’d completely change people perception of what is going on,” she bragged. “’Transitional’ gives a sense of movement to replace the sense of stagnation that welfare implies. ‘Fund’ implies that it is an investment. And ‘living’ sounds so alive and uplifting.”

Representative John Conyers (D-Mich) praised Jackson’s intent, but urged caution. “There’s no question we need to upgrade the terminology,” Conyers agreed. “However, I’m not sure we should jettison the term welfare. The word ‘welfare’ is in the Constitution. ‘Transitional living fund’ is not. Since the ‘good and plenty’ clause of the Constitution authorizes Congress to provide welfare I don’t know if it would be safe to abandon it.”

That won’t happen until after the economy completely collapses.

IF Jackson-Lee (what a great Confederate name she has) wants to drop the term “welfare” for government payments, I propose that when we refer to her we drop the term “Congresswoman” and substitute “crazy. A fair exchange, I would say.

As for communist John Conyers to talk about “good and plenty”, he should know. He’s been living off the taxpayers for decades with “good and plenty” money and perks, while his city of Detroit was destroyed by him and his Communist Party buddy, the late mayor Coleman Young, the two heads of the City Council, marxists Maryanne Mahaffey and Erma Henderson, aided by the schmucky Levin brothers, Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich) and Rep. Sander Levin.

Conyers may like the term “good and plenty” but he obviously isn’t applying it to Detroit.

...In 2000, she favored permanently normalizing trade status for China, arguing that it would aid both human rights and Houston’s economy.
Jackson Lee traveled to the 2001 World Conference against Racism in South Africa, and has backed sanctions against Sudan. On April 28, 2006, Jackson Lee, along with four other members of Congress and six other activists, was arrested for disorderly conduct in front of Sudan’s embassy in Washington. They were protesting the role of Sudan’s government in ethnic cleansing in Darfur.

Jackson Lee is active on immigration issues. She has proposed increasing border security and increasing opportunities for legalization among those living in the United States. She has opposed a guest worker program, saying that the idea of guest: “connotate[s] `invite, come,’ and, at the same time, it misleads because you ask people to come for a temporary job of three to six years and they have to leave if they don’t have another job and I would think that they would not.”

Jackson Lee has urged better relations between the U.S. and Venezuela, which she describes as a friendly nation. She said the U.S. should reconsider its ban on selling F-16 fighter jets and spare parts to that country. The U.S. State Department bans such sales due to “lack of support” for counter-terrorist operations and Venezuela’s relations with Iran and Cuba.

In July 2010 Jackson Lee said: “Today, we have two Vietnams, side by side, North and South, exchanging and working. We may not agree with all that North Vietnam is doing, but they are living in peace. I would look for a better human rights record for North Vietnam, but they are living side by side.” It was noted that Vietnam had not been split for four decades.
Speaking in July 2010 at the NAACP national convention, Jackson Lee compared the Tea Party to the KKK.

Jackson Lee said in January 2011 that repealing the health care law would be in violation of the Constitution. She argued that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is constitutional under the Commerce Clause, and that repealing it would violate both the Fifth and the Fourteenth Amendments.

At a Homeland Security Committee hearing on radical Muslims in the US, held in March 2011, Jackson Lee said that Peter King’s hearings were helping al-Qaeda and “going the same route as Arizona.” She complained that the hearings were scaring Muslim Americans and called them “an outrage.”

It’s pretty ambitious of anyone to try to satire Sheila J. Lee.

Seriously. I read this story on another site yesterday and I never for a second thought it might be satire.

It just rings true, through and through.

My dad went to school with the Mars’ twins and those girls were smokin, sizzlin hot. Their grandfather brought us M&M / Mars candies.

One time we met Mr Wrigley over on Catalina Island when the Cubs were doing some spring training stuff over there. He was a tuna fisherman.

There used to be good stocks of big tuna just close enough for even half day boats out of Long Beach. Not now though- you got to go about at least 100 miles out I think - that’s a 3 day boat - Japanese overfished the hell out of our tuna

I only wish it was “transitional” but our leaders have chosen to make it a permanent state - easier to buy and rely on votes that way.

I lived in Houston for over forty years and Sheila Jackson became a permanent joke in the last several. Houston also has a zerobamawannabe by the aquired name of Quanell X. Q rides around in a Cadallac Escalade and does some community organizin. Be keepin his name out there and tryin to extort some bucks like Jesse and Al. Q showed up in Pasadena to protest the shooting of two illegals by a fine old dude, Joe Horn, that had caught the perps robbing his neighbor’s home. When he tried to voice his bs a group of Harley riders reved their bikes and drowned him out. Q soon left.

Hmm, I don’t know, John. I think you missed this one, because Sheila Jackson Lee is closer to being a satire of herself than you could ever write.

Great column, as usual.

By-the-way.

There will be a U. S. Senate seat for the great State of Arizona available in 2016 (full disclosure, it might require a primary challenge to the incumbent).

Shall we pencil you in?

-That’s why they call it welfare. What should we call it, brilliant entrepreneur?

#29: That would have made one helluva double date.

Re Wrigley. I was on a graduate research project on Red China/Red Guards at a Center funded by the Public Relations firm that handled the Wrigley’s account.

Now, if we took the Wrigley commercial saying and applied it to the Mars twins, you would have my philosophy on dating back when I was young.

“Double your pleasure, double your fun,
Take out two girls instead of one”

And I did. (Also double dated with twins, redheads at that).

Then there was the day I escorted 15 young ladies to a bowling alley, 8 in my ‘57 Chevy, 7 in my friend’s ‘55 Chevy.

She was the head of her hosting sorority chapter for an out of state one, and asked me if I wanted to help transport them to the bowling alley (Duck Pins, not Ten Pins).

As I opened the door to the place, hustling them in so that we could get shoes and enough alleys, a guy standing by asked me “How did you do that?” re having 15 girls around.

My reply was simple and direct, “PRACTICE.”

You should have seen the look on his face. My friend Judy and I laughed all the way to the registration desk. Judy was cool.

Ah, those were the days.

Necco Wafers; Sweet juice wax bottles. Pez candies. Candy buttons. A Three Musketeer bar that actually was big enough to break into three pieces. Coke in a bottle, caps with cork in them. Donuts that had taste. 25 cent French Fries in a bag. 25 cent Kosher hot dog or small Corned Beef sandwich. Toddle House hashed brown potatoes. Milk shakes with real ice cream in them. Movies, 50 cents.

Girls who dressed and acted like girls/young women, and could carry on an intelligent conversation. Baseball game tickets, 3rd base side, 75 cents.

The beginning of the bikini as normal beach apparel. Oh the horror of it all! My eyes (never recovered fully from Lois T and that green thingy. She melted the sand at Atlantic City one summer. The guys from the Un. of Penn. part of the beach were jealous as hell - I went to Temple Un. Screw them. She had good taste).

Good night, for a while.

A rose by any other name....

Common management “we have to be seen to be doing something” misstep. Renaming a thing does not change the thing.
