Home schooled children outpacing public school students
Do you know there are 10 and 12- year-old students already attending college classes in America? It is happening every day as parents flee the public schools and instead educate their children at home.

Or at least have welfare cheats who can calculate the maximum benefits they can scam.
But if you are a home school parent don't forget socialization for your kids, so take them into the bathroom, beat them up and take their lunch money. After that you can teach them to smoke while in there.
“You are slacking; algebra is easy and should be no trouble for a normal 10 year-old: as it is merely the extension of the basics of arithmetic with unknowns.”
I think that overstates it. We homeschool and I have an advanced degree in Complex Systems, which involves more than a bit of linear algebra, calculus, and regular old algebra.
Maybe I’m a bad teacher but algebra has been very challenging for our (now) 13 year old. I’ve been introducing him to simple algebra during the Saxon 6th and 7th grade courses—really, some of the pre-algebra stuff ought to be solved with algebra because its the simplest and most intuitive way to solve the problem.
He’ll get it. But different kids get it at different rates. And the rate of change varies too :) When he hit puberty, the rate of change went negative for about six months.
My 11 year old is doing calculus and linear algebra. All on his own. He can’t attend college until he is 13
I don’t know about that. I first considered homeschooling, 13 years ago, after reading posts here at FR about homeschooling.
I am not kidding. The reason I have a very successful 15 year old, homeschooled kid is because of the info I found on FR a very long time ago.
This is terrible. Perhaps home schooled children should be required to eat lead-based paint or something.
I´ve got 2 grand daughters, the one in public school is 15, was successful trying to get pregnant. The school system is providing her daycare on a site for single moms. There is a neat facebook page, ....Medicaid will pay for the birth, the sperm donor is age 14. This girl goes to a school of EXPERTS. The homeschooled grand daughter is conjugating Latin Verbs, reading Homer, all of the old Classics, breaking down sentences and can explain an indirect object, where to put a comma, and the sequence of numbers known as Fabriconni Numbers and the names of the eliptical orbit of Earth and the Kepler effect. The most common conversation exhibits intelligence, reason, thinking and comprehension. Home School 100% takes the front of the class. OH...for the days we can get rid of ObamaCare and the NEA.
Someone who just got a Ph.D. in the philosophy of science at Princeton reports that all the really smart kids, the ones who are way ahead of their peers, were home-schooled.
Makes sense. The big classes in public schools hold the kids back. They have to move at the rate of the slowest student.
We have done partial home-schooling and partial brick-and-mortar. We have a very good high school (her older siblings went there) so our 11-year old daughter is a full-time freshman in the “real building”.
If things change drastically at the high school, we would pull her out in a second but for now this is working well. However, we DO NOT want her going to college yet so we hope she will be content to do high school in 4 years. 15 will already be pretty young for college.
What a wonderful story; thanks for sharing it! :)
Why would any parent allow their children to attend a government indoctrination center where their minds will be turned to mush?
Does this border on child abuse?
The result of Common Core will be students leaving the schools in droves.
13 years ago - 2000. Boy, I have been on this web site far longer, although I don’t post much.
Originally, my wife was against homeschooling, but given the total ineptitude of our carefully selected school district (we moved to it no less) she eventually saw reason and we yanked our then two kids at 3 and 1st grade respectively.
Maybe some of my old posts helped change your mind. Even if it is not true, it is nice to think that maybe it is. :)
Funny, how fast the years go. Each one faster than the last.
>>Seriously, it’s likely you’re using it (or something based on it) in everyday life.
It is virtually impossible not to be. Many control algorithms used in automotive Electronic Control Units are calculus based. Most people drive.
Just for one example of many.
I have often thought of going back and looking for the old threads, so I could tell posters the results of reading their posts. My kidos are doing so well. I have homeschooled for 13 years now.
Yes, 2000 is the exact time frame. I don’t remember posters names, but I remember discussions about John Galt, and freedom in education, and the scary topics of course, socialization, Home School Legal Defense League- were topics in general.
So hey thanks for posting, because it very well could have been you. :)
We had HSLD phone number on speed dial with strict protocols with our kids for answering the door and they never answered the phone.
I remember one case that scared us silly — children seized for dehydration from an anonymous tip. The dreaded anonymous tip...
