IRS conferences cost $50 million, including lecture on ‘leadership through art’

There’s also this other part of the IRS story this weekend, by the way. Turns out that IRS officials were both living it up and persecuting you on your dime. Oof.

The conference spending included $4 million for an August 2010 gathering in Anaheim, Calif., for which the agency did not negotiate lower room rates, even though that is standard government practice, according to a statement by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

Instead, some of the 2,600 attendees received benefits, including baseball tickets and stays in presidential suites that normally cost $1,500 to $3,500 per night. In addition, 15 outside speakers were paid a total of $135,000 in fees, with one paid $17,000 to talk about “leadership through art,” the House committee said.

Why did the GOP house appropriate 50 million to the IRS for this purpose?

I wrote my "Republican" congressman, Scott Perry, about the IRS about a week ago. My email called for the abolition of the IRS, the 16th Amendment and the creation of a national consumption tax on individuals (not businesses or any other entity). This was his response (Notice that nothing that I wrote about was mentioned in his response):

Dear Mr. XXX,

Thank you for contacting me regarding your concerns with the recent admission by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that it singled out conservative groups for additional scrutiny during the 2012 election cycle. Your sentiments are important to me, and I share them.

The Associated Press reported that Lois Lerner, the IRS head for tax-exempt groups, admitted the IRS treated these groups unfairly, including targeting the 501(c)(4) applications of organizations with "tea party" or "patriot" in their names and even asking for donor lists, which is a violation of IRS policy.

Ms. Lerner's revelations are very disturbing. In March 2012, then-IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman testified before the House Ways and Means Committee that conservative political groups were not being targeted, testimony that is hard to reconcile with Ms. Lerner's subsequent admission of unfair and discriminatory action leveled against Tea Party groups. The IRS appears to be following the familiar script of blaming low-level officials for mistakes that may violate IRS policy at best and federal election law at worst. I find it difficult to believe higher-level IRS and Treasury officials were unaware of this activity. Instead of the truth, we were offered now-discredited assurances during the 2012 election cycle that no "flagging" of conservative groups was occurring.

The actions of the IRS are reprehensible. History proves that using Federal agencies to monitor political enemies has devastating consequences. As Congress continues to monitor the situation closely, know that I will work to ensure that no group – conservative or otherwise – is unduly or unlawfully targeted because of its members' beliefs.

Once again, thank you for contacting me. I appreciate your concerns and welcome your continued feedback. Please visit my website at perry.house.gov to submit further questions/comments or to sign up for my e-newsletter, Facebook page, and/or Twitter updates.

Back to my comments, I consider that completely political and an entirely unprincipled response. Why can't Republicans call a spade a spade?

In a sane world this story would have stunned me. As is, I’m thinking, “Just 50?”

Many in the IRS did not even pay their own taxes
while the gang-attacked innocents for the DNC, Obama,
and al Qaeda-in-America.

They belong in prison.

Because these bottom feeders see the taxpayer as “fish in a barrel” and they could care less about their constituents. They all need to go, every freaking one of them!

Find some right thinking people, Trey Gowdy comes to mind, and support them!

Wrong response. You should have said "I don't like it, and we will get you my pretty. You and your little dog, too."

Do you really imagine a consumption tax will eliminate the need for professional tax collectors?

IIRC, US Rep. Niki Tsongas, MA (D), got some ugly sculpture installed in the Andover, MA IRS facility.

Something about making it a more pleasant place for the the workers.

Just another way of bringing back OPM to her district.

Obviously, there would have to be an agency to collect whatever kind of tax is imposed. But our current system is very intrusive and subjective and practically cries out to be abused. It was just a matter of time until somebody like Obama came along and saw the potential, since the power to tax is the power to destroy.

The point is that a more neutral tax, either x% on all income or a consumer tax, would limit the usefulness of the agency as a political death machine.

IRS works with a lot more taxes than just personal income tax.

You might get rid of some field agents, but over the years they've computerized most everything they do ~ except certain things like SEIZURES. The Cincinatti division would still be in business ~ they also make the deals with non payers for payment ~ and that is something that will just never go away.

BTW, the big deal in the current scandal was the determination of a private organization's eligibility for TAX EXEMPTION.

Wasn't about collecting taxes at all. So, tell me, how will you handle tax exempt organizations in the future?

“...So, tell me, how will you handle tax exempt organizations in the future?”

If the income tax system is replaced with a consumption tax, use of the term “tax exempt” organization becomes irrelevant. No organization would pay income taxes with such a system, and therefore all organizations are “tax exempt”.

Individual members of an organization would be taxed based on their consumption, but the organization as an entity would not pay taxes.

That’s my understanding. Did I miss something?

Yeah, a lot ~ large numbers of nonprofits collect money then spend it. And, as you know, all organizations, corporations, and so on are ‘persons’ ~ so they’ll get taxed on the money they spend unless they have an exemption on the pass through ~ which is the same thing as the 501(c)4 standard ~ the one IRS has exceptional trouble with.

BTW, from the viewpoint of the taxpayer there are no neutral taxes!

Have you guys even thought about this or are you just shouting slogans?
