Mark Steyn warns of 'serious secession movements' if drift toward socialism not reversed

Radio host Dennis Miller and National Review columnist Mark Steyn considered Thursday the possible outcomes if the United States continues down the path of socialism.

If socialism became the prevailing governing philosophy, Miller speculated, escaping it wouldn’t require a move to the Australian outback. Instead he suggested heading for the state of Texas, because it would be the first place to push back against it.

“If I ever do flee, don’t think fleeing has to involve you going over to Alice Springs or something,” Miller said. “I’m going to Texas because that’ll be the first place that pushes back. They’re not going down the tubes with this country if this country decides to go down the tubes. I really think I’d head for Texas.”

I call that a solid endorsement for Texas, but be careful Mark because they're going to say that's "raaaacist."

Keep hearing that but so far, other than talk, haven't seen much evidence. One strong indication would be a state's utter rejection of Obamacare mandates on the state citizens and accepting the consequences of no federal funding.

Are there any states even CLOSE to that?

If there is a secession movement, which side will San Antonio and Austin be on?

Restored constitutional America and socialist America would be a vast improvement on the wretched mess we have now.

With the influx of wetbacks into Texas, I'm not confident that they'll have success in breaking away. Frankly, I favor revolution over secession - I don't think the military will stand with the Marxists.

I believe there is a whole wing at the Limbaugh Institute that houses accountants who are there only to deal with the annual IRS audits.

“The idea that all 50 states are going to be content to slide off the cliff in a kind of haze and a drone of sort of soporific princess fluffy-bunny socialism is completely false. I mean, there will be — you’re going to have serious secession movements if some of this stuff isn’t turned around, not just in Texas.”

So Mark Stein catches up to Free Republic, this thought has been going around here for years...

IMHO there will eventually be a secession movement that takes place in the form of a virtual rather than physical secession. In this scenario, one or more states would essentially refuse to go along with federal mandates, laws or policies that run counter to state laws, are impossible to fund, or otherwise adversely impact the people in a given state.

Consider the rise of so-called sanctuary cities in left wing cities. This is another form of ignoring federal laws. The same thing can be done by conservative states just on a bigger scale.

A newly formed Republic of Texas (doesn’t THAT sound nice) could form 1,000,000 man militia in about 24 hours after the first call for volunteers went out, and that would just be form the outsiders coming in to help out.

Why don’t we just have a big liberal-conservative — meet at the Mississippi and have a big paintball game so we can get this figured out?

I wish. If it ever happens it won't be at the Mississippi, and it won't be paintball.

I’ve always thought Alaska stood the best chance of seccession. Isolated from the rest of the country, a natural independent mind-set, and most importantly, vast resources the Pacific Rim countries would trade for. Of course, for this to be successful America would have to have been seriously weakened in both spirit and military strength. We know that would never happen, don’t we?

P,S. If the “progressives” ever get the political power to eliminate the Electoral College so that our leaders are chosen by straight mob rule, I’m heading north...

which side will San Antonio and Austin be on?

Does it matter, in the long run? How many of the birkenstock wearers in Austin can lay in a gun or a mortar?

Then, he went to San Antonio and was killed by Mexican nationals.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I don’t know enough about Texas, so I’m gonna ask.

The percentage of Texans of Hispanic descent is on the rise. Do these folks, as a group, subscribe to traditional Texan values (rugged individualism, mistrust of big government, etc.)?

Or do they see Texas as just location on the map?
