The Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show was expected to bring $44 million in direct spending to the region, according to the Hershey Harrisburg Regional Visitors Bureau.
Now that the show has been postponed -- with no reschedule date set, and none imminent -- many hotels and restaurants could be in for a difficult winter.
"This is a hard time of the year to fill hotels," said Rick Dunlap, a spokesman for the bureau. "A lot of these hoteliers relied on this show to make their budget for the early part of the year."
The $44 million in direct spending the bureau projects does not include secondary expenses that also bring money to the region, like sales at gas stations or for supplies.
The show, billed as the largest outdoor sports show in the state, was to have more than 1,400 vendors. Many of those vendors traveled from out of the area and would have needed hotel rooms for the show's week-long run.
dummassery has consequences.
Yep, I concur jb. Most of the folks I meet from PA (with the exception of the blue cities) are scrappers. And I love their accents being a Southerner and all ;D!
The Patriot News is a leftist paper so you need to consider that when reading their stuff....
Whole towns, businesses, school districts and industries shut-down here for the various hunting seasons; deer, bear, fowl etc. If we could just add ‘liberals & demonrats’ to the hunting seasons, I’d arm-up with my Barrett .50/ Class III AR-10/15, and go along. LOL.
Yeah, both of them. Not a lot of Obama voters in Hershey.
If not for the preppers gun and ammo buyers, the economy would really stink.
Reed Shows is just a part of Reed Elsevier. They are huge. Lexis-Nexis is them. All those glossy travel magazines that you see in your doctors’ office like Conde-Nast and scientific and legal publications as well. They’ll take a hit(rightfully so), but they’re far from finished. A couple of years back I did a 2 week job racking 300+ servers for their U.S. based operations.
Thanks for the correction. I should know better, having once lived there.
Progressive was the sponsor listed on the ESOS site. GEICO though is just as bad, cancelling a policy because the person is involved in weapons manufacturing.
These shows are regional and the folks of PA love the outdoors just as much as Texans.
Take another look -- Reed Elsevior is a HUGE conglomeration, and they own/control the premier Lawyer Information and Search/Research sites of Lexis/Nexis.
Harrisburg, PA, the state capitol, is in Dauphin County. In 2012 Dauphin County voted for Democrats who won all but two races, as follows:
Obama 52,4%
Casey 54.1%
Kane 54.7%
DePasquale 49.4%
McCord 53.3%
Perkinson 81.9% ***********
******* Perkinson lost the election, no thanks to Dauphin County, obviously.
and the TWO Congressional Republican (suburban outlying districts with little of Harrisburg, if any) who led in parts Dauphin County ——
Barletta 50.6%(first R to hold the seat in 3 decades)
Dent 62.9%(traditionally R)
The fact is that whether it’s Harrisburg, PA, ALbany, NY, Austin, TX or Richmond, VA, most state capitols are quite blue, regardless of the leanings of the rest of the state.
I should have been more specific, ie. Reed Exhibitions USA.
Thanks for the clarification.
