It took Edmund Burke a very little time to decide that French Revolutionary philosophy posed a massive threat to civilization and social stability throughout Europe. By the end of his life, eight years after the storming of the Bastille, his fears of Jacobin contagion had led him to ask for a secret grave, removed from his family sepulchre and hidden from those-the English Jacobins-who would plunder the lead from tombs for bullets to assassinate the living. In 1796 he wrote: ...out of the tomb of the murdered monarchy in France has arisen a vast, tremendous, unformed spectre, in a far more terrific guise than any which ever yet have overpowered the imagination, and subdued the fortitude of man. He demanded nothing short of a war of extermination against this armed doctrine.
It is somewhat surprising, then, to find that this enormous threat brought out Burkes most urgent defense of an aspect of civilization as trivial as manners. Of course, the very fact that we consider manners trivial was all part of the problem from the start, as far as Burke was concerned, and he felt driven to state his case unambiguously in his First Letter on a Regicide Peace (1796):Manners are of more importance than laws. Upon them, in a great measure, the laws depend. How can this apparent inversion of common sense be justified?
Manners are clearly not the same as laws. They are generally unwritten (unless we are talking about ritual), and they lack the regular, codified sanctions that support institutes and decrees. However, they have a similar function: in our small social communities and informal relationships they lay down expectations of behavior that facilitate the smooth-running and therefore expedite the purpose of these various bodies from the nuclear family to the shopping mall.
I posted only three paragraphs of a lengthy, well written piece.
Want to read the BEST DESCRPTION of the French Revolution and it’s consequences? Read Ann Coulter’s ....Demonic ....you’ll never forget it!
Maybe we’re in the third French Revolution and not the 2nd American Revolution.
Just saying.
IMHO
I’ll bet with just a teeny bit of effort you could give us a three sentence synopsis saving lots of time and money.
Well worth the time for reading. Thank you for posting it.
I must ask you to follow me in examining the three great domains of Human Action. First comes the domain of Positive Law, where our actions are prescribed by laws binding upon us which must be obeyed. Next comes the domain of Free Choice, which includes all those actions as to which we claim and enjoy complete freedom. But between these two there is a third large and important domain in which there rules neither Positive Law nor Absolute Freedom. In that domain there is no law which inexorably determines our course of action, and yet we feel that we are not free to choose as we would

The demon is a mob, and the mob is demonic. The Democratic Party activates mobs, depends on mobs, coddles mobs, publicizes and celebrates mobsit is the mob. Sweeping in its scope and relentless in its argument, Demonic explains the peculiarities of liberals as standard groupthink behavior. To understand mobs is to understand liberals.
In her most provocative book to date, Ann Coulter argues that liberals exhibit all the psychological characteristics of a mob, for instance:
Liberal Groupthink: The same mob mentality that leads otherwise law-abiding people to hurl rocks at cops also leads otherwise intelligent people to refuse to believe anything they havent heard on NPR.
Liberal Schemes: No matter how mad the plan isFraternité, the New Soviet Man, the Master Race, the Great Leap Forward, the Cultural Revolution, Building a New Society, ObamaCarea mob will believe it.
Liberal Enemies: Instead of counterrevolutionaries, liberals opponents are called haters, those who seek to divide us, tea baggers, and right-wing hate groups. Meanwhile, conservatives call liberals liberalsand that makes them testy.
Liberal Justice: In the world of the liberal, as in the world of Robespierre, there are no crimes, only criminals.
Liberal Violence: If Charles Mansons followers hadnt killed Roman Polanskis wife, Sharon Tate, Clinton would have pardoned him, too, and hed probably be teaching at Northwestern University.
Citing the father of mob psychology, Gustave Le Bon, Coulter catalogs the Lefts mob behaviors: the creation of messiahs, the fear of scientific innovation, the mythmaking, the preference for images over words, the lack of morals, and the casual embrace of contradictory ideas.
Coulter traces the history of the liberal mob to the French Revolution and Robespierres revolutionaries (delineating a clear distinction from Americas founding fathers), who simply proclaimed that they were exercising the general will before slaughtering their fellow citizens for the good of mankind.
Similarly, as Coulter demonstrates, liberal mobs, from student radicals to white-trash racists to anti-war and pro-ObamaCare fanatics today, have consistently used violence to implement their idea of the general will.
This is not the American tradition; it is the tradition of Stalin, of Hitler, of the guillotineand the tradition of the American Left.
As the heirs of the French Revolution, Democrats have a history that consists of pandering to mobs, time and again, while Republicans, heirs to the American Revolution, have regularly stood for peaceable order.
Hoping to muddy this horrifying truth, liberals slanderously accuse conservatives of their own crimesassassination plots, conspiracy theorizing, political violence, embrace of the Ku Klux Klan. Coulter shows that the truth is the opposite: Political violencemob violenceis always a Democratic affair.
Surveying two centuries of mob movements, Coulter demonstrates that the mob is always destructive. And yet, she argues, beginning with the civil rights movement in the sixties, Americans have lost their natural, inherited aversion to mobs. Indeed, most Americans have no idea what they are even dealing with.
Only by recognizing the mobs and their demonic nature can America begin to defend itselfu
You’re welcome. I found the blog from a piece about Tolkien and have found lots of good stuff - foundational, basic type stuff.

Read Preacher’s post #5
Wita? More like NIT Wita.....
EXACTLY ..... Preacher. It is fascinating how this genius, ANN COULTER compares and contrasts the French and American revolutions. I majored in history at an expensive, elite Ivy League university and believe me not one of the pointy headed tenureds there came close to the brilliant job she did in her book ‘Demonic’ it is sheer insightful genius!
I’d say based on your sign in date you are overdue a lesson in manners. Apparently this thread didn’t help any.
I like manners. Manners are the best. Be careful, though, don’t hold manners to close to your crotch.
As a start, anyway...
Didn't I, girls?
And, to a person, after I got done hitting them, they had an egnimatic, satisfied smile on their face.
Sure, I’ll listen to the guy who shot the dude on the $10 bill tell me about manners.
Well, more of a grin than a smile, and more of “what the heck” rather than enigmatic, and more “there goes Laz again instead” of “satisfied”, but yes. The rest of the story is true. LOL!
