While visiting the lovely island of Cozumel, Mexico, Mr. Dragon and I rented a car and went around the island to one of our favorite places Señor Iguana's. This is a local place (not a chain) and they have great margaritas, excellent food and the view is one of the most beautiful of the ocean waves.
As we sat down and gave our drink order to Rudy (a nice young man that we visit with every year), we noticed a table near the view, that had 4 people sitting at it. On one side, was a Muslim male, and on the other side 3 women. 2 of the women were covered head to toe and were wearing white hajibs (headscarves) the 3rd younger woman appeared dangerously modern, short skirt, head uncovered, and even had on nail polish. Mr. Dragon, Rudy and I werent really sure if it was a man with 3 wives, or a man with 2 wives and a daughter not that it matters to the tale.
The man was drinking a Pepsi from a can and one of the women had a bottle of water. What was interesting with this is that the group had to have brought those drinks in, they were not for sale at the location. When Rudy brought our complimentary chips and salsa, the man noticed and asked for some also and Rudy being the good server that he is, brought him some.
The man ate and the women didn't. The man then left the table and went out to the street/parking area. After a moment, he called to the women to join him and to make sure they brought the chips with them. This group never bought a thing, no food and no drinks. Being the curious people that we are, when Rudy came around to our table to check on us, we asked him whether or not the Muslims had actually purchased anything in the restaurant. He said no, they came in with their own drinks, got free chips, took up a table that a paying customer could have used, and then the insult to the injury, was they left and completely stiffed him on the service.
Rudy really appreciated that we had noticed the behavior and said something to him. Mr. Dragon who speaks passable Spanish told him that he hated muslims ever since 9/11 and Rudy completely agreed.
Ping - interesting event today in Coz.
Much of the 3rd world (not just limited to Middle East, although I see it in spades there) has the attitude - if you are giving something for free, I will take it. As much as I can. All of it.
Reciprocity is of absolutely no concern, because I don’t know you, you are not in my circle of family, or people to whom I am indebted or who have power over me.
That is so sad on so many levels.
“....anything they can get for free.....”
I didn’t realize Moooochelle was from the ME. Ya’ learn something every day.
Hmm... valid point.
I know that restaurant, it’s a beautiful area. I suppose that’s the difference between us and them, I would never want to take up prime space without at least ordering a drink or tacos or something, especially if I was going to be there a while.
But you are right, if it’s free, they will take it, and as much of it as you will continue to give.
At a restaurant like that, the chips aren’t free. They are provided without charge to customers who are there to drink or dine. It is a conditional arrangement as a legal matter. I wish Rudy had called the local policia and put them in the mexican jail.
Tulum, The Original Beach House...
If you can make the swim, go for it.
LOL
I probably could 20 years ago....
You and me both.
At this point I am just happy to make it back into the dive boat.
The thing that cheers me up about this whole episode is that, being in Mexico, the chips were made with and fried in 100% pure ‘manteca’ (aka PORK FAT).
LOL!!!
That is priceless!
that's why God created speedboats!!!!!
LOLOL
Good point.
I rent a VW convertible for $35 a day while there (cruzin'), and we ALWAYS go there and to Tony Rome's. Tony has the BEST MARGARITA!
Here is step-daughter with a new "friend". They called it a "kitten"!
Very cute kittens.
I don’t recall a Tony Rome’s. Where is it located?
Thanks for the links. We will have to check it out the next time we go to Coz.
