TV theme songs part 4 of 4
I was born in 1971. I tell you this because it should help to tell you something about the point of view from which I have watched TV shows. As a child, I watched reruns of sitcoms and cartoons from the 60s, as well as new programming on PBS, and Saturday morning children’s programming. During the late 70s, I also started watching a few shows regularly during prime time. In the 80s I watched a huge number of shows during prime time. During the 90s and later there have been far fewer new shows that I liked, although among those few that I did like, I found them to be excellent.
This is a list of many of my favorite TV theme songs. Most of these are shows that I have enjoyed watching during at least some point during my life, although some of them are included here only because I like the song and have never liked the actual show itself.

The theme from Welcome Back Kotter still gives me the warm fuzzies.

One of my favorite TV theme songs is from Gunsmoke. I like the radio version the best.

I’ll take “believe it or not, I’m flying on air” for $500, Alex.

Have to include
The Prisoner and
Firefly. Most shows I just skip over the intro. Those I'll replay.

My all-time favorite TV show theme song would have to be
If I Could Tell You, theme of
The Voice of Firestone, a show that started on radio in 1928 and later moved to TV, where it continued until 1959. We used to watch it every Monday evening.
Another great themes is the one for The Twentieth Century, a documentary which aired on Sundays from 1957-1967.

John B Sebastian was on something when he sang that song on the 1st season of SNL. He had to back up and try again.

I was just talking with some of my FReeper friends the other day and we were asking ourselves “Gee, I wonder what TV shows bloggers used to watch?”
Not.

Lots of themes I liked. The light, jazzy sound of the first few seasons of “Mannix;” The great “Route 66” theme; The bright, peppy music to “Burke’s Law;” Frankie Laine singing the “Rawhide” theme; the list is almost endless. Even something as innocuous as “The Bob Newhart Show” from the 1970s had terrific theme music. Good grief, think about it... even “The Jetsons” had pretty spiffy music!
Do shows even have theme music anymore? I haven’t noticed a single thing to really catch my ear in decades now (on the extremely limited basis I bother with modern-tv). All I’ve tended to hear is a bunch of moany, metrosexual-sounding vocalized crap, which usually lasts no longer ten seconds at the very most. The sounds of which invariably encourage me to change the channel.

Today’s TV these songs are definitely nowhere nearly as good as those of the past.
