Vice President Joe Biden said the death of Florida teen Trayvon Martin should prompt a debate about gun laws, particularly the states Stand Your Ground statute.
Its important that people be put in a position where their Second Amendment rights are protected, but that they also dont, as a consequence of the laws, unintendedly put themselves in harms way, Biden said in an interview broadcast Sunday on CBS Face the Nation.
Biden, a former chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said any such discussion would be a state issue, not a federal one. Still, he expressed doubt over the idea that carrying a gun makes people safer.
The idea that theres this overwhelming additional security in the ownership and carrying concealed and deadly weapons I think its the premise, not the constitutional right, but the premise that it makes people safer is one that Im not so sure of, Biden said.
George Zimmerman, a 28-year-old neighborhood watch volunteer, has claimed self-defense in shooting Martin, who was unarmed. Zimmerman remains free, claiming protection under Stand Your Ground, which permits using deadly force rather than retreating in a fight.

That “under the radar” thing again.
Agreed. I was also wondering when they were going to get to their “guns are bad” knee-jerk reaction.
So here’s the answer. When this 6-foot-plus 17-year-old jumps me in the dark and is punching my face and slamming my head against the ground, I need a gun for self-defense.
We SHOULD debate this. Bring it on.
And this dummy is VPOTUS.
My Constitutional right trumps your “doubt” every time Mr. VP
What is there to debate? Threaten with a gun, 10 years. Use a gun in crime, 20 years. Use a gun to murder, life. Use a gun to defend yourself from harm, no problem. So where is the problem Mr. Biden??
Frankly, I think this was the intent of the hue and cry all along.
To me, it's simply incredible that the bolded part of the quote was uttered by a liberal. If you had told me in the 1990's that this would be said by the likes of Biden, I would have laughed you off the stage.
Some progress has been made.
....as far as these people are concerned, fill in the blank....just about anything will do.
How about a violent crime debate instead, you pandering idiot.
Oh shut up you ignorant old man..
I agree. Just looking at the statistics and the fact that many states are expanding rights for gun owners, the gun grabbing lobby has been thoroughly discredited. I was equally surprised Biteme had to add this qualifier before he jumped into slamming the gun laws.
Why are they bringing “Stand Your Ground” into this? This wasn’t a stand your ground case - you never had a duty to retreat when doing so is impossible as with a thug slamming your head into the cement!
So why? Because it’s a toe-hold issue. One of the last big legal fights. And they’re losing. So they need to push back.
See my tag. BTW, the predator class includes the leftists who (1) enable thugs and (2) count on the thugs’ votes...
Gun control. This is what it’s been about from the beginning.
This chaos is orchestrated by the WH in conjunction with the media - it has always been about gun control. They all want it.
They think that their messaging problem is because what appeared to be an open-shut case, is not an open-shut case.
However, the real problem is that this WH is about as stupid as it gets and couldn’t pull off a sweater; let alone political theater.
Just like Fast-n-Furious.
No, Joey Joe Joe, it should spark a black thug control debate.
Slow Joe:
Was Trayvon trespassing on private property (gated community)? Yes.
Did Trayvon assault Zimmerman? Yes.
Did Trayvon simply walk away or call the police? No.
So all the Trayvon protesters don’t understand 1) private property, 2) assault, or 3) avoiding confrontation?
Face it. Trayvon did all the wrong things. Period.
Oh, and F*** you Spike Lee, Will Smith, Bobby Rush, MSNBC and anyone that doesn’t believe in due process!!!!!!!!
It could be YOUR child or YOUR father.
We were soooooo wrong in this case.....from the beginning.
Joe is just looking for the 2nd Amendment justification for Fast And Furious.
