February may be our shortest month, but its filled with notable events. This month, we celebrate Groundhog Day, Chinese New Year and Washingtons Birthday. We also commemorate Presidents Day as well as every lovers favorite, Valentines Day. February has also been reserved as Black History Month. After doing just a little digging, I was struck by the significant role the Republican Party played in not only emancipating slaves in the antebellum South, but also in accepting and elevating them into American society. I was also amazed by how often the Democratic Party thwarted the GOPs efforts.

Blacks voted Republican steadfastly up to the period of the assassination of McKinley and the party’s takeover by Teddy Roosevelt. I wonder what happened? Not many Republicans helping to register voters in the 1950’s or marching with Martin Luther King. Not many contemporary Republicans copping to their party’s “progressive” anti oligarchical history.
