National Poll: Gingrich 37, Romney 28
Weekly Standard ^ | January 27, 2012 | Daniel Halper

Posted on 01/27/2012 6:58:38 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

In the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, Newt Gingrich has a sizable lead over his Republican rival Mitt Romney. NBC reports:

Gingrich leads Romney 37 percent to 28 percent nationally among registered Republicans likely to vote in the primaries; Rick Santorum is in third with 18 percent, and Ron Paul is fourth with 12 percent.

There is a bit of a problem for Gingrich, however. "Though Gingrich is the preferred candidate of GOP primary voters, he performs the worst of all Republican candidates tested against Obama, including Santorum," NBC reports.

Romney fares best against the president, trailing Obama by six points among registered voters, 49 percent to 43 percent. That’s a four-point improvement for the president from a month ago.

Obama, however, beats Gingrich by a whopping 18 points, 55-37 percent, expanding the president’s 11-point lead a month ago.

Santorum also loses to Obama, but by a narrower margin, 53-38 percent, than Gingrich.

But there is also good news for Gingrich. "Gingrich is also viewed as the most electable candidate by GOP primary voters. He leads Romney 2-to-1 among those who picked electability as mattering most to them in a candidate. He holds a narrow lead, 46-44 percent, among those say views on issues matter most," says NBC.

The poll was released last night, so it does not take into account last night's debate in Florida.

No one outside of the Republican primary voters, and leftist activists are paying attention to the the race, I have no doubt when Gingrich steps on the national stage to take on Obama, his numbers will improve drastically in the general election.

This “he’s not electable” is nonsense.. He’s the only person in the race who is remotely challenging Obama directly on policy and philosophical views, and has the stones, experience and intellect to truly make the election an ideological one, not a tit for tat who can smear the other guy better. The libs always have a better smear game, so thinking that an avoid confrontation and conflict race is going to work is nonsense.

Disgusting is the word, all right. The man makes my skin crawl. I do not understand how so-called conservatives can be so lacking in discernment, and miss his smarminess and his phoniness. It’s all over his face, it’s in his voice....it’s just RIGHT THERE.

And it’s clear that he truly takes pleasure in trying to destroy people.

On the plus side, mitt can’t blanket the airwaves with negative ads in every state.

He doesn't have to. He's got the GOP Establishment feeding lies and distortions to the media, who are gladly putting it out everywhere. All these endless hit pieces are free and ubiquitous adverts for Mittens.

If Romney wins, I will hold my nose and start counting the reasons I love him. Because next to Obama he’s a an ultra-conservative.

I sure won’t be voting for Romney if he’s the nominee. No way in H-E-DOUBLE-L will he ever get my vote. I’ll write in a candidate if I can, I may vote for the Constitution Party candidate, but no way whatsoever will I EVER cast a vote again for someone who disgusts me, like I did with McCain. I think there are literally millions in America who feel the same way and will not hold their noses ever again to vote for the lesser of two evils, no matter what it costs, even the re-election of Obama.

My thoughts exactly. Newt turned it around on a dime in SC. He can do this on a national stage. Right now, my guess is not many Dems have been watching Republican debates. Newt does take Ronnie’s torch..he, too is a Great Communicator.

Agree on the latter, but the ads were the difference in Iowa, and perhaps Florida.

These polls pitting GOP possible nominees agains’t Obama are meaningless. Wait until we actually nominate someone and I believe then you will see that GOP nominee quickly take the lead agaisn’t the president.

Wait until GA announces Barry is not going to be allowed on the ballot due to not meeting constitutional requirements. Thats going to be interesting.

It won’t matter. GA is not a swing state - solid red. Too bad we can’t contest his eligibility in Florida which could possibly be a swing state.

Newt has got to be running more ads.

This is scary because the latest Florida polling that Freepers refuse to post because it isn’t good anymore do not show a good picture.

It shows a Mitt blowout.

This really is upsetting because it will be very hard for Newt to win this because all the states are stacked against him coming up next.

I am almost out of hope. Florida would have energized Newt for the rest of the country and helped him win.

Now, it’s just adds to Mitt’s momentum if the FL polling is accurate.

I just can’t vote for Mitt, period. Never said this before about anybody. I happily voted for McCain despite his foibles because he was a good man and at least right sometimes.

But, I just can’t with Mitt.

There are NO substantial differences between Romney's record as Governor of Massachusetts, and Barack Obama's as president.

Pledge your vote for Romney (if he's the nominee) if you must. Just realize that you will not be voting for the lesser of two evils.

From what I hear, Santorum is in PA tonight doing his taxes.

I loved him in the dabate last night. It’s the first time I’ve seen anyone challenge Romney on Romneycare.*

*h/t that other dude. ;o)

If Santorum will drop out, Newt surges.
