You hear that sound? Of course you do. Its a dog whistle. Im told that we conservatives (read: racists) use dog whistles all the time to clandestinely run down members of minority groups and others with whom we disagree.
It is fascinating, I will concede, that the people we use these coded messages to badmouthblacks, Latinos, etc.often seem more adept at hearing the high-frequency whistles than we do. Why, just today, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee became the latest member of the Congressional Black Caucus to call out Newt Gingrich for the underlying suggestions in his reference to Barack Obama as the food stamps president. A video of her remarks can be found here.
I heard Gingrich make that reference during the debate, and while it was my sense that he wasnt attempting to flatter the president, on whose watch the number of Americans at or below the poverty line reached its highest level since the 1960s, I wasnt unaware of any underlying message having to do with race.
Maybe Im just that sort of tone-deaf person who needs to have ethnic slurs clearly enunciated in order to hear them. Heres one that rang loud and clear when I read it.
"How long are we going to have to listen to this hillbilly nonsense before Perry bows to the inevitable and drops out of the GOP presidential race?"
The authors of that putdown were the opinion staff of the Los Angeles Times, and to their credit they didnt mince their words. They came right out and called the governor of a southern state a hillbilly. The offense that prompted the use of that pejorative term was Rick Perrys defense of four marines who desecrated Taliban corpses by urinating on them. But the reason is inconsequential. Name calling can be hurtful, as we are so often reminded.
Since the term hillbilly is a slur of an entire group of Americans, I am assuming that the leadership of the DNC and other voices on the left will be issuing condemnations of the LA Timesshortly.
Yes! It makes sense that you have your priorities right!!
The la times......as interesting to read as the section on fuses in you car owner manual.
I have. He is the ONLY one that isn’t part of the establishment. And comes in with fresh ideas.
Makes you wonder if the Repub voters are idiots or just want to change Dummie establishment for RINO establishment.
“Don’t fret, he gets it here too, as do the other candidates by the factions of fans of the opponents......It’s dog eat dog with the resident bullies attacking anyone who disagrees with their political favorite. And it’s gotten worse with every political cycle since I’ve been here
Enjoy the FR “uncivil war”......and be careful what you say about your favorite guy lest the dogs be unleashed.”
You said it. Only I’d say they’re less like dogs and more like packs of yapping, screeching hyenas.
“What is next in their bag of slurs to define the Governor of Texas, the decade-plus executive of the 13th largest economy in the world, the one that is booming?
It certainly has been something to watch. His record is stellar and so he had to be given the “dumb” treatment.
“
Conservatives are making a big mistake in not getting behind Perry. I thought they had more sense—I really did.
As for the L.A. Times, I think real men, especially real Southern men, make those metrosexual, namby-pamby, simpering, girlish, nail-buffing androgynous things feel threatened and insecure.
Thanks shield.
Yes. He's a man of his word.
Rick was just not up to a National campaign, maybe another day.
