(CNN) - With eight days to go until the South Carolina primary, a new poll suggests a close contest in the first southern state to vote in the race for the Republican presidential nomination.
According to an American Research Group survey released Friday morning, 29% of likely Palmetto State GOP primary voters say they're backing Mitt Romney, with 25% supporting former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Romney's four-point margin over Gingrich is within the poll's sampling error.
The survey indicates Rep. Ron Paul of Texas at 20%, Texas Gov. Rick Perry at 9%, former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania at 7%, and former Utah Gov. and former U.S. ambassador to China Jon Huntsman at 1%, with 7% undecided.
The poll was conducted Wednesday and Thursday, after Tuesday's New Hampshire primary. Romney, the former governor of neighboring Massachusetts, won nearly 40% of the vote in New Hampshire, with Paul, the longtime congressman who's making his third bid for the White House, finishing a strong second.
Paul has surged 11 points and Santorum has dropped 17 points since ARG's last survey in South Carolina, which was conducted after Iowa's January 3 caucuses and before New Hampshire's primary. Perry has jumped 7 points since the earlier survey, with Gingrich inching up two points and Romney losing two points. Romney edged out Santorum by eight votes to win Iowa's caucuses. Paul came in third place.

Perry is drawing just enough support to make sure that Romney wins.
Which was the plan all along.

LoL!
Perry should be up to 15 by now!!
I had dinner last night with the lib in-laws, and they all spoke approvingly of Ron Paul. I’m sure he got a ton of crossover votes in NH, and probably will do the same elsewhere.
Needless to say, that kind of thing is the reason why the RNC smiles at the thought of liberal crossover states and frontloads the primaries with them.
The battle for third continues with Paul (not even a Republican) with a uncomfortable lead of the pack...???
I’m looking for a way out of this Alternate Universe I accidently stumbled into!
Perry is more qualified to be President than any of the rest. What is it that makes people think otherwise? A brain-freeze because that's pretty much all anyone has on him.
I'm glad to see his numbers going up. Maybe the American people can stop playing these games and wake up in time.
Exactly. He is the man we need. And his poor performances in the early debates happened because of post-surgery pain and meds. He has no problems at all debating now.

What planet do you live on?
That is truly the most vacuous comment I've read in a long time.
That is doubtful when people here still have heartless as a tag line.
Good news. Realclearpolitics.com does not track this polling company.
Wake up, will ya???
Perry has been a non-contending also-ran since the lights went out at his first debate.
The conservatives have 41% in the poll, the RINOs 30% and the anti-Constitution crackpot 20%.
It is long past time for the conservatives to field one candidate and for the GOP to tell the nutcase to take a hike.
What planet do you live on?
That is truly the most vacuous comment I’ve read in a long time.

Illuminati conspiracy with shapeshifting reptillian aliens running everything, try to keep up, CW.
It is great to see Dr. Paul’s conservative message of
Peace
Sound Money
Liberty
gaining so much traction.
I am pretty sure that is what Jimmy Carter ran on too!
Which was the plan all along.
OR...
Santorum is dropping just enough support to make sure Romney wins.
Which was the plan all along.
