Newt Gingrich: Yes, I'd team up with Santorum to beat Romney
examiner.com ^ | January 4, 2012 | Joe Newby

On Wednesday morning, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich told radio talk show host Laura Ingraham he could "absolutely" see himself teaming up with former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum to beat Mitt Romney.

"Of course," Gingrich said. "Rick and I have a 20-year friendship. We were both rebels, we both came into this business as reformers, we both dislike deeply the degree to which the establishment sells out the American people. We both think Washington has to be changed in very fundamental ways, and we have lots of things that fit together. And the thing that’s interesting is if you take the votes, you add to that Perry and Bachmann, you begin to see the size of the conservative vote compared to Romney…if you take, you know, Santorum and Perry and Bachmann and Gingrich you get some sense of what a small minority Romney really represents.."

Lost what? One state? I guess Iowa is the whole cattle, huh?

And Rick “lost” as well to Romney.

This could develop into Gingrich/Santorum versus Romney/Perry.

Nah Perry don’t like Mitt. It might be Romney/McCain!

Yeah, but he’s not angry and bitter against Obama, the Republican establishment or the curret state of affairs. He’s angry that someone (Paul & Romney)ran negative ads against him. Politics is a nasty business - he should’ve put his big boy pants on before he got into the race.

” Newt is going to “define” Romney big time now and it will benefit Santorum.” <<<

If Newt goes after Romney directly himself, this is usually true, that with no surrogate doing the smash mouth for you, other than yourself, it usually hurts your numbers. (This is what Romney’s super PAC is doing for Romney, so he himself can keep his nose clean.)

However, don’t you think the voters are on to the game and more than ready for some push back against Romney for a changre and who can do it better than the Newtster?

I’d be happy either way. But I think the Good Cop (Santorum) and Bad Cop (Gingrich) could be magic for our country right now.

In 2008, would we have voted for Palin with McCain as VP?

This could really be effective.

Newt can go completely negative on Romney, freeing Santorum to point out how the GOP needs to band together to fight Obama (without having to go negative on any GOP candidate).

This gets rid of the RINO while pulling the GOP together. It may just save the GOP.

If this is what Gingrich has in mind (to fall on the grenade for Santorum) then I have just raised my opinion of Newt.

The headlines and talk on Fox will be ‘TWO AGAINST ONE’.

IMHO this is not a good strategery.

“Perry don’t like Mitt”

What would be powerful and useful right now would be Perry and Bachman having a joint press conference to endorse Newt.

Santorum is Bush II -— fiscal liberal, social conservative.

As you are aware, politics makes for strange bedfellows.

It could be that while Gingrich and Santorum overtly team-up to attack Romney... Perry covertly joins Romney by simply attacking Gingrich and Santorum while NOT attacking Romney.

Then when the dust settles and Romney is left standing and needs to unite the party, he names Perry as Vice President.

This is what I fear could happen.

Gingrich “lost” last night.

Gingrich finished higher than McCain did in 2008. South Carolina will decide.

In your scenario then Gingrich could become Secretary of State like Hillary did for Obama.

Yeah, the guy who won 62 counties obviously has no chance and needs to be the running mate of the guy who won 0 counties.

I’m more concerned about how the final ‘12 GOP POTUS/VP ticket, no matter who it ends up being, will, successfully, get the majority of voters to vote for them during the ‘12 November general election. How will they get enough women voters to vote for them? How will they get enough _______ voters to vote for them, too?

I agree that Newt has the best intellect and credentials for this race. One on one with Santorum, Newt is the senior player. So many people are going with Santorum right now, but Rick has not endured the onslaught that will come upon him if he stays up. Newt has taken it all and is still standing. I can’t wait for the Saturday debate. Newt is the most articulate and convincing and will remind everybody why his campaign caught fire just a month ago and why the base should come back to him.

Yeah, kind of like the way he “teamed up with Cain” when Cain was running?

With friends like that, who needs enemies?

He will use Santorum to woo his supporters, just like he name dropped Cain, Palin and whoever he deems to be most useful at the moment, then toss them like a hot potato.

Santorum's 15 mins is just about up. He'd be wise to tag up with Newt.

I disagree.

Santorum surged, and almost won Iowa, precisely because he is the alternative to Gingrich.

As much as people are looking for an anti-Romney candidate, there were also many looking for an anti-Gingrich candidate. And they found him in Santorum.

If Santorum finishes with a strong second place in NH, he will be well on the way to solidifying the anti-Romney AND anti-Gingrich vote (those who just never became comfortable with the potential for Bad Newt to show up at any moment).

A lot of people were willing to vote for Newt because it seemed like he was the only one who could win. Santorum now looks viable and, whether he is or isn't, will be known shortly. In the meantime, all those people supporting Newt mainly because he seemed electable will now be reconsidering.

The last thing Santorum needs to do is align with the candidate who is actually pushing votes his way.
