EAST VILLAGE Demonstrators linked to Downtown's Occupy Wall Street protest say they plan to overtake Tompkins Square Park this weekend.
Longtime local activist John Penley, who has participated in the weeks-long protest and other related events, said he decided to organize the action after polling nearly 100 park-goers on the idea this past weekend.
People had already been talking about doing something at Tompkins Square Park, said Penley, 59, noting park's place in history as the site of the infamous 1988 riots, in which police clashed with protesters following a city order to close the park to the homeless.
The planned demonstration follows the heels of a march by hundreds from Zuccotti Park in Lower Manhattan to Washington Square Park Saturday.
Penley said the group is expected to start with a picnic at noon Saturday, followed by a general assembly where the demonstrators will decide whether to camp out in the park overnight.
The park closes at midnight unlike Zuccotti Park, which as a privately owned public space does not have a closing time.
Penley said its not the groups intention to confront police though they would be aware of the threat of arrest.
Were not going to start a riot. Theyre just going to lay down and get arrested, he said of what protesters would do if they decide to break curfew. If people do decide to do nonviolent civil disobedience, thats fine with us.
Penley added that he is encouraging the Occupy Wall Street protesters to come to Tompkins Square Park to alleviate overcrowding at Zuccotti Park. He also wants to draw attention to the spaces legacy as a stomping ground for local activism through the years, dating back to the high-profile 1988 riots.
One of the reasons that we want to do this is to educate the new people living in the neighborhood about what went on in Tompkins Square Park in the '80s and the '90s, and the police response to it, he said.
The event will be dedicated to late activist and East Villager Monica Shay, who died in July after a mass shooting at her Pennsylvania home, and late documentarian Bob Arihood, who died late last month from heart failure, the organizer said.
Penley said he expects at least 100 to 150 participants from the neighborhood, not including demonstrators from Zuccotti Park or anyone else who decides to join.
Theyre going to have to figure out their response to it, he said of the authorities, adding that protesters will not be seeking to incite any skirmishes with police.
Were not going tolerate any kind of violence over there.
People go because its a happening. Happenings get old.
Eventually it'll be the usual 11 smelly hippies out there, bemoaning the fact that today's kids just don't care. Around Christmas, the media will do the "they're still out there story" and show the handful of hobos exchanging needles and cookies.
Seems they urinated & deficated all over one area & need to move to a cleaner place, so they can dirty that up too.
What do they do about rain?
These creeps will be gone as soon as the weather turns cold and rainy. New York City gets wild storms in November and brings down leaves and tree limbs like crazy.
I had to laugh at one protester who said that the Tompkins Park sit-in will be dedicated to some activist who “died in a mass shooting.” You can’t make this stuff up!
P.S.: The New York City freeper board has been reporting that the “occupiers” are way smaller than the media is letting on.
—Will they use it as an excuse to declare martial law and suspend elections?—
If this were 2012 that might be a real risk, but these guys don’t have the staying power. As long as it’s sort of a party thing they’ll stick around. Eventually they’ll miss the usual lifestyle and break up. Probably.
I can’t imagine this going more than a couple more weeks. Especially when the weather turns really nasty.
This is the same "breviary" I saw at the Capitol, at GOE III. These same hippies "standing on the wall", jumping down and being arrested.
I thought they were supposed to be "reenacting the Day of Rage".
They and their ba&&less selves will be easy pickins.
Finally "shower"?
one of the most liberal cities in America and all they can get is in their hundreds.
LOL
Anything short of a 250,000 is a failure in a city of millions and one of the most liberal cities with even one of the most union cities and the mayor who has given them a lot of leeway.
Are they now moving on because they cannot go with the stench they have left and are doing there?
I thought it must be smaller than the pro homo, liberal cross dressing media are trying to report.
Why?
Because there is no overhead shots, no wide angles no nothing but close in shots and even then I see more trash and a handful of hippies, weirdo’s dressed as zombies etc.
Yeah, that'll go well.
"Back in '88, a bunch of folks just like us rose up and spoke truth to power on this spot! And the cops came in and kicked all our asses twice! So we all took dumps in the fountain and left!"
"Did they use dogs, tear gas and sticks?"
"Yeah!"
"I hope the cops haven't changed in the past 23 years."
This was reported here on FR.
I wish the NYC freeper board didn’t have the shyest little folks on FR. They talk only to themselves and yet do yeoman work on conservative causes. They were influential in the recent Brooklyn election and have been monitoring the stupid “occupiers” and reporting on the small crowds.
I haven’t been able to get down there to look at it myself but since they seem to be creeping uptown, maybe I’ll get a look at the freaks any day now.
Once they start badmouthing the fool in the wh, they will be the sheehan of the war protest movement
Finally something to wash the feces and urine from the pavement and perhaps wisk away some of the stench from the wanna-be hippies. Sucks to be near a storm drain during the first rain in Zucotti Park.
I”ve thought for a while now, this is a preclude (by the Ds), for the real riots that will happen next summer when the Democrats see the tsunami coming.
I want to believe that Wisconson’s labor rules & Alabama’s illegal rules (toughened I hope) prevail.
When the left sees this wave coming, they’re gonna be way more angry.
This is but a test for next summer/fall.
I do fear martial law & elections suspended.
