“Smart meters” insidious government encroachment into daily lives

Homeowners must keep a heads up to any effort from their local power and light, gas company or water supplier to install “smart meters” as replacements for their present traditional meters.

“Smart meters” are insidious devices that measure the amount of electricity, water or gas used by an individual consumer. They can and are used to regulate the amount of each commodity we are allowed to consume as decided by a corporate/governmental bureaucracy.

Physical dangers

Researchers point out these wireless meters will emit dangerous radio microwave frequencies throughout our homes every day.

Additionally, these smart meters are an invasion of our personal privacy, theft of our personal liberties, and give government “1984” – Big Brother type control of each of us. Give these people the ability to cut off our wattage gas or water and we give them the power to control everything we do and think and say.

Researcher Tom DeWeese sees smart meters as part of the U.N. Agenda 21 which is being pushed on us by our present administration.

He quotes U.N. adviser Maurice Strong, a very dangerous and influential collectivist as saying, “Current lifestyles and consumption patterns of the affluent middle class involving high meat intake, use of fossil fuels, appliances, home and work air-conditioning and suburban housing are not sustainable.” Smart meters fit in with the progressive movement’s efforts to instill “social justice” on us as they define social justice.

DeWeese adds, “Smart meters or energy audits affect everyone in town. What is the problem? Government is dictating your energy use that you are paying for.”

Smart meters deny your right to choose how much energy you are willing to buy, to determine how warm or cool your house will be, whether to take a hot shower or not…..

There wasn't much of an option here. If you want electricity you take the meter.

My presence on this forum should be a clue as to which I chose. I don't have time to make my own electricity!

If I can afford to pay my utilities this is an invasion of my privacy.

Perhaps this should be in the homes of those who can’t and must rely on the government. But I’m sure that won’t happen. In the name of compassion and fairness those who can afford will be limited while those who can’t afford will not. If wealth is going to be spread around they figure energy should be too.

What a bunch of techno-crap. Must have been written by the same outfit that did global warming research.

Not all smart meters are wireless (after all the damn things are hooked to a wire), but if they are (like many AMR systems today), the power level is a fraction of that of a cellphone, wi-fi, or other consumer wireless device.

There are some valid concerns about demand-response, for example, but articles like this that ignore them and spew technical gibberish do more harm than good.

Oh please oh please not the "scary smart meter propaganda" again...

I'm a smart meter designer.

No, they cannot report what you're doing. I only wish they had enough memory for such things.

No, the radio waves (NOT RADIATION) they emit is not dangerous, no more so than a cell phone. They only transmit a few times a day.

Yes, they can be programmed to turn your power off. So pay your bill.

Any other questions?

This is what drives me a bit nuts about the current batch of "protestors" in the news. This is the kind of crap they SHOULD be protesting. It's this vampiric death spiral some businesses and our government are engaged in that is killing our economy.

It also reminds me of the following quote to help illustrate the point I'm trying to make:

"Those who sell their liberty for security are understandable, if pitiable, creatures. Those who sell the liberty of others for wealth, power, or even a moment’s respite, deserve only the end of a rope... America’s historic misfortune is that her people have seldom been equal to the ideals upon which their nation was established. "— L. Neil Smith, The American Zone (2001)

Government sells out to monied interests to secure campaign cash. Business sells out principles to buy either protection or influence. Take another swirl 'round the toilet bowl.

Add in a few useless idiots to act as a false flag/misdirection to keep the public looking elsewhere, and you have what is going on right now.

Pull the plug. Format the hard-drive. Use the Constitution as a restore disk. Let's put this thing back together from scratch...

“We haven’t heard much about these things lately, but thery have not gone away.”

Same as with the ‘Food Safty Bill’ and Obamacare.

The ice is melting right beneath our feet and we barely hear a peep out of ‘conservative’ pundits, talk show hosts and elected representatives.

I’ve had a meter on my AC compressor for over 15 years in Wisconsin. Never a problem.

They don’t ask you. They tell you.

Creeping big government: several years ago in my county the local "departments" became "authorities". No longer the subservient "department" of transportation, or the county fire "department", they had to become the county "transportation authority", or the county "fire authority". What big egos these civil "servants" have.

So. Can they be programmed to turn off my dryer? My hot water heater? My table saw in the midst of a tricky cut? If you don’t mind, I’ll be the arbiter of my own electricity usage, thank you very much. sd

CMP in Maine is installing the smartmeters. If wifi were gonna kill, my home wireless LAN would have done me in long ago. CMP has an opt out plan if you don’t want one - $12.50 a month adder to keep your old meter and something like $10.50 a month if you get the meter but the mesh networking is deactivated. A meter reader still comes to your home. Our PUC has been pretty responsive to concerns about privacy, etc.

We’re in a somewhat sparsely populated area with virtually no line of sight between homes. Not sure when they’ll get to us but they will probably have to implement some additional nodes or bridges.

Ha, Ha. So naive. Go ahead and give government control of every aspect of your life if you want to, but I won't. You think government hacks won't leverage power you're provided in the future? Probably not, as long as you do as they say.

Oh please oh please not the "scary smart meter propaganda" again... I'm a smart meter designer.

I am also a smart meter designer, and the ones OUR company is working on can direct electricity to certain appliances while denying electricity to others. We intend work with the power company to shape the clientelle's habits habits. Too much computer or TV? OFF. Too little exercise? Treadmill ON. Obese? Microwave and oven OFF.

We're working closely with Michelle Obama on all this.
